What Is Kalai-II Hydro Project? Cabinet Approves ₹14,105 Crore Clean Energy Plan

To strengthen India’s renewable energy capacity the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the ₹14,105.83 crore for the Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh. This project was announced on April 8th  2026 and it will be developed on the Lohit River. With this this project aims to generate the 1200 MW of clean electricity. This initiative will marks the infrastructure boost and sustainable development for the Northeast India.

Kalai-II Hydro Project: Key Features and Investment Details

The Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project is one of the important ambitious power infrastructure projects in the Northeast India. It will be located in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh and it is the first hydroelectric project in the Lohit Basin which will make it strategically important.

The project has been approved with the investment of ₹14,105.83 crore and it is expected to be completed within 78 months which will around 6.5 years.

This project have an installed capacity of 1200 MW, comprising of the,

  • 6 units of 190 MW each
  • 1 unit of 60 MW

When this facility gets operational the project will generate approximately the 4,852.95 million units (MU) of electricity annually and will contribute to the India’s power supply,.

Implementation and Strategic Partnerships

This project will be developed through a joint venture between THDC India Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

This collaboration will ensures both the technical expertise and local participation.

To support the infrastructure development the Central Government will provide around the ₹599.88 crore for facilities such as the,

  • Roads and bridge
  • Transmission lines
  • And the connectivity infrastructure

This will not only renewable energy project but it will also improve regional connectivity.

Role in Strengthening Power Supply and National Grid

The Kalai-II project is expected to play the critical role in power stability and energy security.

Hydropower is specially hold importance because it can quickly adjust the output and making it ideal for the peak demand management.

The project will enhance power availability in the Arunachal Pradesh and Northeast India and also support grid balancing at the national level.

Parallel Development: Kamala Hydro Project

Alongside Kalai-II the government has also approved the Kamala Hydro Electric Project with the investment of ₹26,069.5 crore.

This project will have the capacity of 1,720 MW and will generate 6,870 MU annually.

Combining this both projects represent the combined investment of over ₹40,000 crore which indicates the massive push towards the hydropower development in Northeast India.
