Milk is an important part of daily life for millions of people around the world. It is used in tea, coffee, sweets, cheese, butter, and many other foods. Some countries produce small amounts of milk, while others supply a huge share to the global market. One country, in particular, is known for producing the highest amount of milk and plays a major role in the world’s dairy industry.
The city of Anand in Gujarat, India, is known as the Milk Capital of the World. This city became famous because it is the birthplace of Amul, India’s largest and most successful dairy cooperative. The work done in Anand helped transform India into the world’s biggest milk-producing country.
Anand earned this name because it became the centre of a major dairy movement in India. In 1946, farmers in the area joined hands to form a cooperative to get fair prices for their milk. With the guidance of Dr. Verghese Kurien, known as the Father of the White Revolution, milk production improved, new technologies were introduced, and the dairy industry became more organised and efficient.
The dairy changes that began in Anand helped millions of farmers. Farmers could now sell milk daily and earn a steady income. They also received better training, veterinary services, and modern machinery. Innovations like cold storage, milk vans, and large dairy plants made milk easily available across the country. Anand’s success became a model that many other countries study today.
