Location of Chitrakoot

Chitrakoot is situated in both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Four tehsils of Chitrakoot district – Karvi, Rajapur, Mau and Manakpur – are in Uttar Pradesh, while Chitrakoot Nagar is in the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. This dual-state location is what makes it a unique district in India.

Religious Importance of Chitrakoot

Chitrakoot holds great importance in Hindu religion and mythology. It is believed that Lord Ram, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, spent a significant part of their exile in Chitrakoot. This is why the place is considered very sacred.

Major Religious Sites in Chitrakoot

Chitrakoot is home to many religious sites that attract pilgrims from all over India. Some of the major religious sites in the area include:

  • Kamadgiri Mountain: It is believed to be the place where Lord Ram stayed. People walk around the mountain as it is said to bring good fortune.
  • Gupt Godavari Cave: A sacred cave where Lord Ram and Lakshman spent time during their exile.
  • Hanuman Dhara, Sati Anusuya and Bhartakoopa: Importance places for devotees.
  • Mandakini River: A sacred river that flows through the region.

Historical Significance of Chitrakoot

Chitrakoot is also famous for being visited by great saints and poets like Tulsidas, Sant Kabir and Sant Raidas, who spent time here. Their assassination with the place has added to its religious and historical significance.
