Sant Sevalal Maharaj, a spiritual and religious figurehead of the Banjara community, was born 284 years ago on February 26, marking the beginning of a yearlong remembrance. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, and Meenakshi Lekhi, the Union Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Culture, led the festivities in New Delhi.

  • Sant Sevalal Maharaj was born on February 15, 1739, in Surgondankoppa, in the Shivamogga region of Karnataka.
  • He is regarded by the Banjara community as a social reformer and spiritual guide.
  • Every Banjara family holds Sant Sevalal Maharaj in high regard, and in all of these states, his birth day is observed with great pomp in February.
  • In the Manora taluka of Maharashtra’s Washim district, at Pohradevi (also known as Banjara Kashi), is where his Samadhi Sthal is situated.

  • The Banjara Community is made up of numerous ethnic groups spread out across India, with the majority of them residing in the southern Indian states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
  • This group, known as the Tandas, has permanently given up their nomadic way of life and settled in Tandas across the nation under various names.
  • It is estimated that the Banjara community in the country has a population of between 10 and 12 crore people. To specifically assist the forest dwellers and nomadic tribes, he travelled the entire nation with his Ladeniya Troup.
  • They converse in Gor Boli, also known as Lambadi, a language of the Indo-Aryan Group. No script exists for Lambadi.
