This year, Ganesh Visarjan falls on Anant Chaturdashi, 28th September 2023. Devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganesha, hoping for his swift return in the following year. This article explores the significance and rituals associated with Ganesh Visarjan.

Significance of Ganesh Visarjan

Ganesh Visarjan, also known as Vinayaka Nimajjanam in Telugu-speaking regions, holds immense spiritual significance. It is believed that on this day, Lord Ganesha returns to his heavenly abode after ten days of festivities and worship. Thousands of Ganesha idols are immersed in rivers, lakes, seas and even home tubs or buckets to mark the occasion.

Rituals of Ganesh Visarjan

The day of Ganesh Visarjan is marked by several meaningful rituals that bring families and communities together to bid adieu to Lord Ganesha:

  1. Morning Aarti and Offerings: Early in the morning, family members, relatives and friends gather for a special Lord Ganesha aarti. Modak, fruits, flowers and other delicacies are offered as a gesture of devotion.
  2. Preparation for Visarjan: After the aarti, Lord Ganesha’s idol is prepared for immersion. The idol is then taken to the chosen immersion site amidst celebrations, including dance, music and excitement.
  3. Taking Lord Ganesha’s Blessings: Before bidding farewell, devotees seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings by applying akshat and dahi on his hands. Lord Ganesha is also taken to every corner of the house to usher in good luck and grace.
  4. Offering a Special Meal: A red cloth is tied around Lord Ganesha’s idol and coconut, jaggery and grains are placed in it. This meal symbolizes sustenance for Lord Ganesha during his journey back to his heavenly abode.
  5. Water Sprinkling Ritual: The person performing the puja for Ganapati Visarjan is sprinkled with water as a cleansing and purifying ritual.
  6. Breaking the Coconut: As devotees step out of their homes for the immersion, they offer a coconut to Lord Ganesha and break it in one go. The coconut is then immersed along with the idol.

The Story of Ganesha Visarjan

A fascinating legend is associated with the tradition of Ganesha Visarjan. Sage Ved Vyas, the author of the Mahabharata, requested Lord Ganesha to write down the epic to prevent any mistakes in the narration. Lord Ganesha agreed but set a condition to write continuously without interruption. He wrote for ten days without taking water and to cool him down, Ved Vyas immersed his body in water. This event led to the tradition of worshipping Lord Ganesha for ten days and immersing his idol on the final day, marking Ganesha Visarjan.
