India Elected as Vice-chair at the 12th session of Intergovernmental Technical Working Group

In the 12th Session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group (ITWG) on Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) India was elected as Vice-Chair and represented Asia & Pacific region. Dr. B N Tripathi, Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences), ICAR, and the National Coordinator, vice-chaired the Session and also act as Rapporteur.

The 12th Session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group (ITWG) on Animal Genetic Resources was held in Rome from 18th January to 20th January 2023.

India Elected as Vice-chair at the 12th session of Intergovernmental Technical Working Group- Key Points

  • The Working Group, established by the FAO’s Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), functions to review technical issues, advise and make recommendations to the Commission and further implement the Commission’s program related to AnGR at the global level.
  • In the 12th Session of ITWG, implementation of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, monitoring of AnGR diversity, and preparing the 3rd Country Report were reviewed.
  • The points on the role of microorganisms relevant to ruminant digestion, the role of genetic resources in mitigating and adapting to climate change, access and benefit-sharing for AnGR, digital sequence information, and potential implications for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources were discussed.
  • Earlier to the ITWG Session, the Global National Coordinators’ Workshop was held at FAO Head Quarter, from 16-17th January 2023.
  • In the Workshop, Dr. B N Tripathi shared the country’s experience in updating data in Domestic Animal Diversity – Information System (DAD-IS) and presented a framework for cataloging native populations including breed registration, notification system, etc.
  • National priorities for germplasm cryopreservation and documenting non-descript AnGR to fulfill SDG indicators were appreciated by the members.

About Intergovernmental Technical Working Groups

The Commission has established four intergovernmental technical working groups. The purpose of these working groups is to review the situation and technical issues related to their areas of competence, advise and make recommendations to the Commission on these matters, consider the progress made in implementing the Commission’s program of work, consider any other matters referred to them by the Commission and report to the Commission on their activities.

For the working groups to carry out this mandate, the Commission assigns specific tasks to them. The members of the working groups are elected at each regular session of the Commission and are composed of 28 Member Nations. 5 from Africa, 5 from Europe, 5 from Asia, 5 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 4 from the Near East, 2 from North America, and 2 from Southwest Pacific.
