21 March 2023 is celebrated as International Nowruz Day 2023. Every year on March 21, the International Nowruz Day is a much-anticipated global New Year’s festival that marks the spring equinox, ushering in the season of rebirth and nature’s renewal. Almost 300 million people worldwide commemorate the international holiday that the United Nations proclaimed on March 21, also known as “Nauryz,” “Navruz,” or “Nowrouz,” which is translated as “new day” and has a history of at least 3,000 years.

International Nowruz Day 2023: History

Nowruz is celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, the Kurdish areas of Iraq, Turkey, Syria, India, and Central Asia as a whole, though mostly.
● The Nowruz Day celebration attempts to bring people together by fostering principles of peace, friendship, and harmony.
● The celebration of Nowruz, which has its roots in Zoroastrianism, a widely practised ancient Persian religion with light and fire (essential to supporting life) as its primary themes, is observed among other places throughout the Balkans, Black Sea Basin, Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
● Through values of peace, solidarity, reconciliation, neighbourliness, and mutual respect, the Nowruz ancestral festival fosters the strengthening of ties while also encouraging acceptance of cultural diversity and understanding between various communities.
● Nowruz is Spring cleaning, or “khooneh tekooni,” is an exuberant way to usher in Pre-Persian festivities.

When do Iranians celebrate Nowruz?

● Iranians celebrate the “Nowruz” festival a few weeks before the actual New Year to ward off Satan and evil spirits hiding in shadowy places and to prepare for the ceremony by donning bright new clothes.
● In Nowruz They dress in bright new clothes for a fresh start, jump over bonfires known as “Chaharshanbeh Soori” to purge the skate for luck and new beginnings, and children bang spoons on cooking pots known as “qashoq zani” as they go around.

Following a request from member states of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iran, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan who prepared and introduced a draught resolution (A/64/L.30) entitled “International Day of Nowruz” and unanimously adopted it, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Nowruz Day in its resolution A/RES/64/253 of 2010.

International Nowruz Day 2023: Facts

● It has been in Nowruz for countless years. At least 300 million people commemorate the more than 3,000-year-old spring event.
● Zoroastrianism predates both Islam and Christianity. It is well known that Nowruz has its roots in the old Persian religion of Zoroastrianism.
● The Persian New Year is Nowruz. The first month of the Iranian solar calendar is sometimes referred to as the Persian New Year.
● In Nowruz The tradition of jumping over fire represents victory because fire is a symbol of light, goodness, and purification. Nowruz also represents victory over evil.

● International Nowruz Day was established in 2010 with the goal of fostering closer relations amongst nations.
