ISRO Develops World's Largest Vertical Propellant Mixer
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone by developing a 10-tonne vertical planetary mixer, the largest of its kind globally, for solid propellant production. This indigenous mixer, created in collaboration with the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) in Bengaluru, is set to enhance the efficiency and safety of solid rocket motor manufacturing, marking a substantial advancement in India’s space capabilities.
Solid propellants are essential components of rocket motors, requiring precise mixing of sensitive and hazardous ingredients to ensure optimal performance. The newly developed 10-tonne vertical mixer addresses this need by providing high-capacity mixing capabilities, thereby improving productivity, quality, and throughput in the production of heavy solid motors. This development is a testament to India’s growing technological prowess and commitment to self-reliance in the space sector.
The mixer was designed and manufactured through a collaborative effort between ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota and CMTI. The formal handover occurred on February 13, 2025, at CMTI, Bengaluru, where the Director of SDSC received the mixer from the Director of CMTI in the presence of ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan. This event underscores the successful partnership between research institutions and industry in advancing India’s space technology.
Weighing approximately 150 tonnes, the 10-tonne vertical mixer measures 5.4 meters in length, 3.3 meters in breadth, and 8.7 meters in height. It features multiple hydrostatically driven agitators and is operated remotely using a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based control system with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) stations. These advanced features ensure precise and safe mixing of propellant ingredients, which is crucial for the reliability of rocket motors.
This development aligns with the Department of Space’s initiatives toward indigenous development of critical technologies, materials, and machinery, reinforcing India’s commitment to innovation and self-reliance in the space sector.
