Viceroy generally means a representative of a King or Queen who rules another country for him or her. After the revolt of 1857, the existence and rule of the Viceroy came under the British. Before Viceroy, Governor Generals ruled India. The first viceroy of India was Lord Canning who ruled India from 1856 to 1862.
