Namo Bharat Diwas: Celebrating One Year of India’s First RRTS Operations

The first anniversary of Namo Bharat train operations was celebrated as Namo Bharat Diwas in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India’s transportation history. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) organized the event, attended by Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, and Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Tokhan Sahu. During the celebration, excellence awards were presented to outstanding employees who contributed to the success of the Namo Bharat initiative.

Highlights of the Event

Shri Manohar Lal expressed pride in the achievement, stating that India ranks third in the world’s longest metro networks and aims to surpass the U.S. in the coming years. He emphasized the importance of research and development for providing efficient services. The Namo Bharat trains, representing India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), began operations with the initial 17-kilometer section inaugurated on October 20, 2023, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

RRTS Achievements

The current operational corridor spans 42 kilometers with nine stations, including Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, and Meerut South, serving over 4 million passengers in its first year. The system’s average speed of 80 km/h (with a maximum of 160 km/h) significantly reduces commute times compared to traditional metro systems. Ghaziabad RRTS Station recorded the highest footfall, showcasing the public’s appreciation for the Namo Bharat service.

Future Expansion

The RRTS is set to expand to 54 kilometers, connecting critical stations like Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar. Once the entire 82-kilometer corridor is completed by June 2025, passengers will be able to travel from Delhi to Meerut in under an hour, enhancing regional connectivity and transforming commuting experiences in the National Capital Region (NCR). The successful integration of technologies under the ‘Make in India’ initiative further solidifies India’s commitment to sustainable urban transport solutions.
