UK’s new Prime Minister (PM): Liz Truss was elected as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party and the country’s next prime minister. Liz Truss is now the third woman to be elected prime minister of the United Kingdom. By more than 20,000 votes, Liz Truss defeated Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian descent. The country is currently experiencing a cost of living crisis, industrial unrest, and a recession.

  • According to a YouGov poll, Liz had a 62% early advantage over Rishi in the first round between July 20 and July 21, which grew to 69% from July 29 to August 2, and then stabilised at 66% until August 17.
  • Rishi’s popularity oddly declined from a peak of 41% in Q3 2020 to 26% in Q1 2022. While Liz’s popularity increased from 13% to 21% within the same period, Rishi’s popularity graph stayed lower overall.
  • In the UK prime minister election, Rishi Sunak was running against Liz Truss and came short of 20,927 votes to take second place.
  • With 81,326 votes, Liz Truss won the presidency, whereas Rishi received 60,399 votes.
