Tripura’s Asmita Dey wins gold at Junior Asian Judo Championships 2023

Asmita Dey, representing Tripura, has achieved remarkable success by securing a gold medal at the Junior Asia Cup Judo Championship hosted in Macau, China. In addition to her gold medal at the Junior Asian Judo Championships 2023 in Macau, China, she had secured a silver medal at the Asian Open 2023 held in Kuwait City in April of this year and a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Championships in 2022.

Asmita Dey took part in the Junior Asian Judo Championships 2023 in the 48 kg category, facing competitors from 27 diverse countries, including Korea, Bhutan, Iraq, America, and many more.

Asmita’s Journey to Gold

Asmita showed remarkable skill right from the start, excelling in Group D during the preliminary round and achieving a decisive win against Hong Kong’s Suet Yiu Tang. In the semi-final, the 20-year-old Indian judoka triumphed over Australia‘s Ashlyn Do and finally secured the gold medal by defeating Australia’s Anneliese Fielder in the final.

India’s medal tally included three gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal, amounting to a total of five medals in the Macau Junior Asia Cup judo event.

  • Unnati outperformed Ian I Lei, securing her place in the knockouts. She continued her winning streak in the semifinals, defeating Mongolia’s Maralmaa Khurelchuluun, and went on to claim victory in the finals against Australia’s Ryley Rametta, earning a well-deserved gold medal.
  • Arun emerged victorious in Group A, defeating Australia’s Dimitrios Giantsios, and also secured a win against South Korea’s Jimin Lim, topping the group. In the semifinals, he outperformed Saudi Arabia’s Maimani Abdulraouf, and in the final, he cleverly outwitted Australia’s Kohsei Toyoshima to seize the championship.
  • Competing in the 100-plus kg category, Yash Ghangas concluded the event with a silver medal after a tough match against Mongolia’s Khangarid Gantulga in the final.
  • Shraddha Kadubal Chopade secured the bronze medal in the 52 kg category. While she faced a setback in the preliminary round against South Korea’s Jiho Baek, she bounced back in the repechage round, defeating Australia’s Callie Bannister to claim the bronze medal.
