World Accreditation Day 2023: Date, Theme, Significance and History

World Accreditation Day 2023, Introduction

June 9th 2023 marks World Accreditation Day (#WAD2023), a global initiative established by International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and  International Accreditation Forum (IAF) to promote the value of accreditation. IAF and ILAC celebrate World Accreditation Day (WAD) with our members, partners, stakeholders and users of conformity assessment.

Theme of World Accreditation Day

The theme for WAD 2023 is “Accreditation: Supporting the Future of Global Trade”. This theme will showcase how accreditation and accredited conformity assessment activities support the ongoing global supply chain restructuring that continues to be a source of trade normalization as organisations seek new markets and investment opportunities to build resilient and flexible supply chains. This is likely to reinforce long-term growth in multilateral and bilateral trade relationships and augment the value of the ILAC/IAF mutual recognition arrangements in promoting greater supply chain efficiency and resilience.

Significance of World Accreditation Day

The significance of World Accreditation Day is that it raises awareness of the importance of accreditation and its role in ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of products, services, and systems. Accreditation is a process by which a third-party organization, called an accreditation body, confirms that a conformity assessment body (CAB) meets the requirements of a set of standards. CABs provide a wide range of services, such as testing, inspection, and certification.

Accreditation is important because it provides confidence to businesses, governments, and consumers that the products, services, and systems they rely on meet the required standards. It also helps to reduce trade barriers and promote innovation.

History of World Accreditation Day

World Accreditation Day (WAD) was first celebrated on June 9, 2008. It was established by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) as a way to raise awareness of the importance of accreditation and its role in ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of products, services, and systems.

The date of June 9 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the signing of the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) in 1994. The ILAC MRA is an agreement between accreditation bodies that establishes a framework for mutual recognition of accreditations. This means that accredited conformity assessment bodies in one country can be accepted by accredited conformity assessment bodies in other countries.
