In response to the heat wave forecasts, various state governments have issued guidelines. Additionally, the IMD has recommended that the public stay hydrated and take precautions during the hot weather.

IMD Guidelines for Hot Weather

Following are the IMD guidelines for the hot weather:

  1. It is important to remain well-hydrated, especially during hot weather. Drinking at least 2-2.5 litres of water per day is recommended, and beverages such as salted water, coconut water with salt, and lemon water with salt can be helpful.
  2. To prevent heat-related illnesses, it is crucial to avoid being in excessively hot environments for extended periods of time. It’s also important to avoid exercising in the heat and to recognize the severity of heatstroke as a medical emergency.
  3. In addition to staying hydrated, it’s important to limit physical activities that may raise your body temperature.
  4. During a heatwave, it’s advisable to decrease protein consumption and increase intake of fruits and vegetables with high water content. Pregnant women should avoid caffeine, while fresh fruit juice and buttermilk can be beneficial beverages to consume.
  1. Although the choice of clothing is subjective, it’s important to consider the hot weather conditions and wear loose-fitting clothes to minimize the impact of heat on the body and feel more comfortable.
  1. To combat the heatwave, it’s possible to maintain a cooler environment in your home by closing the curtains to block the sun’s rays.
  1. The effects of heatwaves on individuals can vary, so it’s crucial to take extra precautions to reduce the impact of extreme heat. Symptoms may include weakness, fatigue, and body pain, and in severe cases, heatstroke may cause seizures or loss of consciousness.

Tips to Stay Hydrated in the Hot Weather

Staying hydrated during heat waves is important to avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated:

  1. Drink plenty of water: Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty. You can also carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go, so you can sip on water whenever you need it.
  2. Avoid alcohol and caffeine: Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate you, so it’s best to avoid them during heat waves.
  3. Eat water-rich foods: Foods like watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and lettuce have a high water content and can help keep you hydrated.
  4. Stay in cool places: Try to stay in air-conditioned places as much as possible during heat waves. If you don’t have air conditioning, try to stay in the shade or in cooler areas of your home.
  5. Take cool showers: Taking a cool shower or bath can help lower your body temperature and keep you hydrated.
  6. Wear light, breathable clothing: Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing that allows your skin to breathe and helps sweat evaporate.
  7. Monitor your urine color: If your urine is dark yellow, you may not be drinking enough water. Aim for pale yellow or clear urine.

By following these tips, you can help prevent dehydration and stay hydrated during heat waves. If you experience symptoms of dehydration, such as thirst, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, or fatigue, be sure to drink water immediately and seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen.
