KCR Launches Bharat Rashtra Samithi Party After ECI Approval

The Election Commission informed TRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao that it has accepted the name change of his party from Telangana Rashtra Samithi to Bharat Rashtra Samithi. More About This:

Telangana’s ruling TRS on October 5 changed its name to ‘BRS’, heralding the party’s foray into ‘national politics.’ A resolution to this effect was passed at the party’s general body meeting here. Rao read out the resolution and announced that the party’s general body meet unanimously resolved to change the name from TRS to BRS. The TRS on November 7 issued a public notice about the change of its name to BRS and asked the members of the public to send to the EC objections, if any, to the proposed new name.

What The EC Said:

“I am directed to refer to your letter issued on 05-10-2022 on the subject cited and to say that the commission has accepted your request for change in the name of your party from Telangana Rashtra Samithi to Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The necessary notification in this regard will be issued in due course,” read the letter issued by the EC.

The Birth of BRS:

  • It was on October 5, on the auspicious occasion of Dasara, that TRS President and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao announced the new national political entity, 21 years after the TRS was launched in April 2001 to achieve the separate State of Telangana.
  • The TRS, which was formed to fight for separate Statehood and to end the decades of discrimination meted out to the people of Telangana in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, led to a surge in the momentum in the movement and saw the party, in an alliance with the Congress, winning 26 assembly and five Lok Sabha seats in the 2004 elections, thereby making its mark on the political firmament.
  • For nearly 14 years, the TRS played a crucial role in the Statehood movement in association with civil organisations, employees and other like-minded forces. The party succeeded in drawing nation-wide attention to the issue and went on to achieve Telangana State. In 2014, the party emerged as a strong political force in the State by winning the first elections to the Telangana State Legislature. The party returned to power for a second term in December 2018, with an even higher majority.
