1. PNGRB amends regulation to allow unified tariff for natural gas pipelines

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has introduced amendments to the PNGRB (Determination of Natural Gas Pipeline Tariff) regulations to include regulations related to a unified tariff for natural gas pipelines, with a vision of “One Nation, One Grid and One Tariff.” As per the regulations, PNGRB has established a levelised unified tariff of Rs 73.93/MMBTU and created three tariff zones for the unified tariff. The first zone covers a distance up to 300 km from the gas source, the second zone is 300-1,200 km, and the third zone is beyond 1,200 km. These zonal unified tariffs will take effect from April 1, 2023.

4. China announces ‘renaming’ of 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh

China’s Civil Affairs Ministry published a list of standardized names for 11 locations in Arunachal Pradesh, referring to it as “Zangnan,” the southern region of Tibet, and using Chinese, Tibetan, and pinyin characters. This move is seen as an attempt by China to stake a claim on the Indian state, in line with their regulations on geographical names. China’s Civil Affairs Ministry has disclosed the precise coordinates and official names of 11 locations in Arunachal Pradesh. These places include two residential areas, two land areas, five mountain peaks, and two rivers. Additionally, the ministry has listed the categories of the places’ names and their subordinate administrative districts.

5. OPEC members announce cut in oil production exceeding one million barrels per day from next month

In a sudden announcement, OPEC members, such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, and Algeria, have declared voluntary oil production cuts of more than one million barrels per day from May to December. They have stated that this is a preventive action to support the stability of the oil market. The group, which consists of 23 oil-producing countries, had reduced its collective output by two million barrels per day in the previous year and is expected to maintain the agreed-upon production levels at their upcoming virtual meeting.

State-owned Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) has opened its first dedicated branch for startups in Pune, Maharashtra. Sadashiv Survase, Joint Director, Industries, Govt. of Maharashtra, Sajit Kumar, Senior VP SIDBI venture capital, General Managers of the bank, entrepreneurs from start-ups along with customers were present at the event. During the event Bank of Maharashtra signed an MoU with SIDBI venture capital for proactive financing of start-ups. 10. UPI processes 8.7 bln transactions in March, highest ever since inception

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s flagship digital payment platform, set a new record at the end of the fiscal year 2022-23. In March 2023, the UPI processed a historic high of 8.7 billion transactions, worth Rs 14.05 trillion. This achievement marks yet another milestone for the UPI since its inception. As per the National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) data, UPI transactions in March 2023 witnessed a 60% increase in volume and a 46% increase in value compared to the same period in the previous year. In March 2022, the UPI had processed 5.4 billion transactions worth Rs 9.6 trillion.

11. RBI releases data on India’s International Investment Position for the end of December 2022

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has shared details on India’s International Investment Position (IIP) at the end of December 2022. According to the data, non-residents’ net claims in India dropped by US$ 12.0 billion between October and December 2022, settling at US$ 374.5 billion by the end of December 2022. The increase in India’s foreign liabilities was mainly driven by trade credits and loans. Additionally, reserve assets made up 64.3% of India’s international financial assets as of December 2022.
