Amardeep Singh Bhatia Appointed as DPIIT Secretary

Amardeep Singh Bhatia, a 1993-batch IAS officer from the Nagaland cadre, has officially assumed the role of Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). He succeeds Rajesh Kumar Singh, who has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty in the Department of Defence. Bhatia’s extensive experience includes key roles in both central and state governments, particularly in the Ministries of Corporate Affairs and Health & Family Welfare.

Prior Experience

Before his current role, Bhatia served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, where he played a significant part in shaping trade policies and negotiating free trade agreements.

Central Government Roles

In the central government, Bhatia has held several prominent positions, notably in the Ministries of Corporate Affairs and Health & Family Welfare, contributing to policy development and governance.

State Government Contributions

At the state level, Bhatia managed critical departments, including Planning & Coordination, Health & Family Welfare, Environment & Forest, Municipalities and Local Self Government, and Home, demonstrating his broad administrative expertise.

DPIIT’s Current Focus

Bhatia takes over DPIIT at a crucial time when the department is dealing with a 3.49% decline in FDI, with figures dropping to $44.42 billion in 2023-24 due to global uncertainties. The department under his leadership aims to further ease FDI procedures to attract more overseas investments, while also focusing on startups, e-commerce, and enhancing the ease of doing business in India.
