Defence Secretary Opens HAL’s Aero Engine R&D Facility In Bengaluru

Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane inaugurated a new design and test facility at Aero Engine Research and Development Centre (AERDC) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru, Karnataka on December 29, 2023. The AERDC is currently involved in the design and development of several new engines including two strategic engines.

Equipped with special machines, advanced setups, and computational tools, it signifies HAL’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.

Key Engine Developments: Powering the Future

HAL is currently focused on the development of two strategic engines – Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine (HTFE) and Hindustan Turbo Shaft Engine (HTSE). The HTFE, with a thrust of 25 kN, is designed to power trainers, UAVs, twin-engine small fighter aircraft, or regional jets. On the other hand, the HTSE, boasting a thrust of 1200 kN, is tailored for light and medium-weight helicopters.

Testing Capabilities: Ensuring Engine Reliability

The facility houses two test beds for HTFE-25 and one test bed each for testing HTSE-1200, showcasing HAL’s emphasis on rigorous testing procedures. Additionally, setups for testing various critical components and Line Replacement Units (LRUs) have been established to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the engines.

Recognizing the evolving landscape of warfare, Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane urged HAL to collaborate with private companies to develop new platforms, especially in the realm of unmanned aircraft. Its rich legacy includes the successful development and certification of various engines, including the PTAE-7 engine, the first indigenous turbojet engine of India.
