In a landmark move toward digitizing India’s address infrastructure, the Department of Posts (DoP) under the Ministry of Communications signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MapmyIndia – Mappls on August 29, 2025. This collaboration aims to advance the development and implementation of DIGIPIN—a Digital Address Code (DAC) system designed to uniquely identify every address in India through precise geolocation.
What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN stands for Digital PIN, a standardized digital address system that assigns a unique geocode to every property or location in India. Unlike traditional PIN codes, DIGIPIN is geo-referenced, allowing users to find, verify, and navigate to exact addresses with high accuracy.
This initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to,
- Improve service delivery
- Enhance logistics efficiency
- Support e-governance and digital platforms
Role of MapmyIndia in the Collaboration
Under the agreement, MapmyIndia Mappls, India’s leading provider of location-based services and geospatial technology, will,
- Provide base maps to the Know Your DIGIPIN application.
- Enable real-time address generation using geolocation data.
- Integrate DIGIPIN search and navigation tools into the Mappls app.
- Facilitate DIGIPIN mapping for existing addresses in its database.
This will allow users to,
- Locate precise digital addresses
- Navigate seamlessly across platforms
- Access DIGIPIN-based services via the Mappls ecosystem
Building India’s Digital Infrastructure
DIGIPIN is a critical enabler of Address as a Service (AaaS)—a transformative approach for digital governance and business logistics. By integrating MapmyIndia’s APIs and SDKs, the Department of Posts aims to,
- Enhance accessibility and utility of digital addresses
- Create a uniform digital addressing format across urban and rural areas
- Empower developers, businesses, and government agencies to innovate using address-based solutions
Key Benefits and Future Impact
