The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has partnered with global technology company Honeywell to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE). They will establish CoE for sustainability skills and innovation for its Powai campus in Mumbai. This initiative aims to train more than 100,000 students in sustainability related fields by 2030 through industry academia collaboration. The centre will be named the IIT Bombay Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation.
IIT Bombay-Honeywell CoE for Sustainability Skills
The Centre of Excellence at IIT Bombay will serve as a hub for developing advanced skills related to sustainability, environmental technologies and green innovation.
This initiative is being funded by the Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation and which is the philanthropic arm of Honeywell in India.
The centre will focus on equipping students with practical knowledge and real world skills needed to address global sustainability challenges.
Certificate Programmes and Practical Learning Model
The IIT Bombay-Honeywell sustainability centre will offer certificate based programmes that combine academic coursework with real world projects.
This programmes will be open to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students from across the India.
The Students will work on practical sustainability challenges while gaining industry oriented training.
The centre will also support advanced laboratory infrastructure, procurement of modern equipment, curriculum development and research grants.
Five Key Learning Tracks in Sustainability Education
The curriculum at the Centre of Excellence for sustainability skills at IIT Bombay will focus on five major areas designed to prepare students for the evolving green economy.
The five learning tracks include,
- Sustainability reporting
- Sustainable finance
- Energy security
- Sustainable infrastructure
- Policy advocacy
Pilot Phase and Training Targets for the Programme
The IIT Bombay and Honeywell sustainability initiative will begin with the pilot phase before expanding into a large scale training programme.
During the first two months of the pilot phase this centre will develop its infrastructure.
And it is design specialized course modules and train an initial group of around 250 students.
