India and Denmark Collaborate on Clean River Initiative

The Environmental Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark has launched a Smart Laboratory on Clean Rivers (SLCR) with initial funding of Rs 16.8 crore from the Jal Shakti Ministry and an additional Rs 5 crore from Denmark. This collaboration aims to revitalize the Varuna River using advanced technologies and a comprehensive river management plan over a 2-3-year period.

Project Details

The SLCR will utilize hydrological models to analyze the river’s water dynamics and develop a holistic river management strategy. This includes real-time monitoring and data visualization tools to enhance water management decisions. A designated stretch of the Varuna River will undergo targeted interventions to improve regional economic and social development while maintaining river health.

Hydrogeological Model

The final phase of the project focuses on the Hydrogeological Model of the Varuna Basin for Recharge Sites. This component aims to boost the river’s base flow through managed aquifer recharge using advanced geophysical techniques and mathematical modeling. The goal is to identify optimal recharge sites and rates, integrating diverse data sources for a comprehensive river-aquifer flow model.

Collaborative Efforts

The SLCR represents a unique tripartite initiative, combining the expertise of India and Denmark. It fosters collaboration among government bodies, knowledge institutions, and local communities to develop and implement solutions for clean river water.
