India’s postal network has taken a major digital leap. For the first time, the Department of Posts has delivered an online order booked through the Open Network for Digital Commerce. This milestone highlights India Post’s expanding role beyond traditional mail services and its growing importance in strengthening India’s digital commerce and logistics ecosystem.
Why in News?
The Department of Posts successfully delivered its first-ever ONDC online order on January 15, 2026, acting as a Logistics Service Provider (LSP) under the Open Network for Digital Commerce.
First ONDC Order Delivery Milestone
- The milestone was achieved with the booking of the first online consignment on January 13, 2026, which was successfully delivered two days later.
- The order was placed by UdyamWell, an ONDC-enabled initiative supporting rural entrepreneurs.
- This successful transaction demonstrates the Department of Posts’ readiness to operate as a modern logistics partner in a digital commerce environment, combining its vast physical network with technology-driven processes.
Integration with ONDC Platform
- Through its integration with Open Network for Digital Commerce, the Department of Posts enables sellers on ONDC-enabled buyer applications to choose India Post for parcel pickup, booking, transportation and last-mile delivery.
- This integration allows seamless logistics services across platforms, ensuring interoperability and wider choice for sellers, especially small businesses that lack access to private logistics networks.
Click & Book Model Explained
- Currently, the Department of Posts is operational on ONDC under the “Click & Book” model.
- Under this system, sellers can digitally generate pickup requests, select India Post as their logistics partner, and have parcels collected directly from their premises.
- Postage is collected at the time of pickup, while consignments are inducted, tracked and delivered using India Post’s technology-enabled logistics systems. This model reduces manual paperwork and simplifies logistics for sellers.
Boost for MSMEs and Bharatpreneurs
- The first order was placed by UdyamWell, an initiative focused on empowering Bharatpreneurs, including artisans, farmers and rural entrepreneurs.
- India Post’s participation as an ONDC logistics partner is expected to significantly benefit MSMEs and small sellers, enabling them to access nationwide markets without heavy logistics costs.
- The move supports inclusive growth by connecting remote producers to digital marketplaces.
ONDC and India Post
- ONDC is a government-backed initiative to create an open, interoperable digital commerce network.
- India Post operates one of the world’s largest postal networks, making it a crucial enabler for last-mile connectivity.
