The Indian Air Force is set to equip the its MiG-29 fighter jets with the advanced ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile). This move follows the proposal issued by the Ministry of Defense. And this proposal is aim to integrate and test the missile on the upgraded MiG-29 UPG variant. This upgradation of fighter jets will significantly enhance the aircraft effectiveness in to the close-range air combat.
What is ASRAAM
The ASRAAM missile which is developed by MBDA. This missile is the modern short-range air-to-air missile which is designed for the high-speed aerial combat.
It use the heat-seeking technology and operates on the ‘fire-and-forget’ principle. It means that once it is launched it will automatically tracks and destroys the target without further pilot input.
This features makes it highly effective in dogfights and to rapid-response combat situations.
Key Features of ASRAAM Missile
The ASRAAM offers several advanced features that make it superior to the older systems.
Range: Over the 25 km which is more than double the older R-73 missile
Speed: Nearly above Mach 3
Guidance: Infrared heat-seeking
Operation: Fire-and-forget system type
Warhead: Very high-explosive
Length & Weight: It is 2.9 metres and 88 kg
Replacement of R-73 Missile: A Major Leap Forward
Presently the MiG-29 fleet uses the R-73 missile which is the Soviet-era weapon with a range of around the 10-15 km.
The replacement with ASRAAM means that,
- It can double the engagement range
- Also improved targeting precision
- Better survivability in air combat
This transition will marks the shift from legacy systems to the modern warfare technology.
Integration with Indian Platforms and ‘Make in India’ Push
The ASRAAM is already integrated into country’s
- LCA Tejas fighter jets
- Jaguar aircraft
Under the 2021 agreement Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is collaborating with the MBDA for local assembly and testing of the missile in India.
Also the dedicated facility is being developed in the Hyderabad and it will be supporting the Make in India initiative and will strengthen domestic defense manufacturing.
Role of MiG-29 in India’s Defence Strategy
The MiG-29 fighter jets remains the crucial part of India’s air defense system.
- It was inducted in Indian defense system in 1987.
- Also the over 55 aircraft currently in service
- It is capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions
This aircraft has been actively deployed in the operations like including Operation Sindoor (2025) and it will continues to guard western borders of India.
What is a Dogfight in Air Combat
The dogfight refers to the close-range aerial combat between the fighter jets. In where the quick reaction, speed and precision are important for the combat.
Missiles like ASRAAM are especially designed for the such scenarios which will allowing pilots to lock and destroy targets quickly without wasting time in engagement.
