Indian Government Suspends TRP Ratings for TV News Channels

The Government of India has ordered a temporary suspension of TRP ratings for TV news channels. The decision comes following concerns about sensational coverage of the ongoing West Asia conflict involving Israel and Iran. This directive was issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) on March 7 2026. Which is also asking the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to withhold the reporting of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for four weeks or until further instructions.

Why the Government Suspended TRP Ratings

The government’s decision to suspend TRP ratings for news channels is aimed at discouraging excessive competition that could lead to sensational or misleading coverage. Central Authorities observed that some TV channels were prioritizing dramatic reporting in order to attract higher ratings during.

Key concerns raised by the government includes the Unverified or speculative news content related to the conflict. The Exaggerated reporting that may create fear among viewers.  And also Competitive pressure among channels to boost TRP ratings during crisis coverage

Role of BARC in Television Ratings

The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) is India’s official body responsible for measuring television audience viewership data including Television Rating Points (TRPs). This body was Established in 2010. And BARC collects and analyzes data on television viewership across the country.

The ratings help broadcasters and advertisers understand the Popularity of TV programmes and channels. The Audience reach and engagement and also  Advertising revenue allocation based on viewership trends

Legal Basis for the Government Directive

The government invoked Clause 24.2 of the policy guidelines governing BARC operations while issuing the directive. This clause requires the organization to comply with any orders, regulations or directions issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Under this provision the ministry instructed BARC to immediately stop publishing TRP ratings for news channels for a period of four weeks in the public interest.

Is There Any Past Instances of TRP Suspension?

This is not the first time the government has taken action regarding TRP reporting for news channels.

In 2020 the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had also suspended TRP ratings for several weeks after allegations of TRP data manipulation surfaced during a Mumbai Police investigation involving certain broadcasters.

The suspension was implemented to restore credibility and transparency in television audience measurement.
