- On April 23, 2025, indigenously developed HPV (Human Papillomavirus) test kits were launched in India as part of the effort to revolutionize cervical cancer screening. These test kits, which are the result of research supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and coordinated by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, promise to be a cost-effective and efficient solution for India, where cervical cancer is a leading cause of death among women.

- Targeted for India’s Needs: The new HPV test kits focus on the seven to eight most common cancer-causing types of HPV, making them highly efficient and suitable for India’s diverse population.
- Cost-Effective and Efficient: By simplifying the screening process, these kits aim to provide a cost-effective solution compared to traditional methods such as Pap smears and HPV DNA testing.
- RTPCR-Based Testing: Leveraging the advances in RTPCR technology, the kits provide rapid, point-of-care testing, making it easier to implement at various healthcare levels across the country.
Development and Collaboration
- Research Collaboration: The development of these test kits was led by AIIMS, Delhi, and supported by leading research institutes including the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), Noida, and the National Institute for Research in Reproductive and Child Health (NIRRCH), Mumbai. The World Health Organization (WHO) and its International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also contributed to the validation and research process.
- Key Role of the DBT and BIRAC: The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) played a crucial role in funding and supporting the Grand Challenges India programme, which aimed at developing affordable health technologies tailored for India’s needs.
Advantages of the New HPV Test Kits
- Improved Diagnostic Accuracy: The new HPV tests offer better diagnostic accuracy compared to conventional methods like Pap smears, which have moderate sensitivity.
- Post-COVID RTPCR Facilities: With the expansion of RTPCR-based diagnostic infrastructure post-COVID, these test kits are poised to become a cost-effective screening method across the country.
- WHO Recommendations: In line with the Global Declaration for Cervical Cancer Elimination, the WHO recommends transitioning to HPV testing as a more reliable and effective method for cervical cancer screening.
