MoSPI Launches New Logo and Mascot ‘Sankhyiki’ to Modernise Institutional Identity

Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) unveiled its new logo and official mascot ‘Sankhyiki (सांख्यिकी)’ in New Delhi, Delhi. This initiative marks an important step towards modernising the ministry’s institutional identity, strengthening public outreach, and reinforcing the importance of official statistics in national development.

The launch aligns with the central theme “Data for Development”, highlighting the growing role of reliable, timely, and transparent data in evidence-based policymaking and governance.

Why MoSPI Launched a New Logo and Mascot

The primary objective behind unveiling the new logo and mascot is to reposition MoSPI as a modern, citizen-centric institution in an era of data-driven governance. With increasing reliance on statistics for planning, monitoring, and evaluation, MoSPI aims to make official data more accessible, understandable, and trustworthy for citizens, researchers, and policymakers alike.

The initiative also seeks to enhance public engagement by presenting statistics not merely as technical numbers but as tools that directly influence economic growth, social development, and public welfare.

Theme: Data for Development

The guiding theme of the launch, “Data for Development”, reflects the ministry’s core philosophy. It underscores how accurate data and robust statistical systems are essential for designing effective policies, tracking development outcomes, and ensuring inclusive growth.

This theme resonates strongly with India’s broader governance approach, where data-backed decision-making is increasingly central to national planning and reform implementation.

Symbolism and Design of the New MoSPI Logo

The new MoSPI logo has been carefully designed to combine India’s civilisational values with modern statistical science.

At its core, the Ashoka Chakra represents truth, integrity, and good governance, values that form the foundation of credible official statistics. The inclusion of the Indian Rupee symbol (₹) at the centre highlights the critical role of statistics in economic planning, fiscal management, and national growth.

The design also integrates numerical elements such as ९, statistical symbols like =, S, and Σ, and an upward growth bar (↗). Together, these elements symbolise modern data systems, analytical rigour, and progress driven by evidence-based insights.

The colour palette of saffron, white, green, and deep blue reflects growth, truth, sustainability, stability, and knowledge, reinforcing both national identity and institutional purpose.

Mascot ‘Sankhyiki (सांख्यिकी)’: Making Statistics Citizen-Friendly

Alongside the logo, MoSPI introduced its first-ever mascot, ‘Sankhyiki (सांख्यिकी)’, a friendly and approachable character designed to represent the ministry.

The mascot’s key objective is to simplify complex statistical concepts and make them relatable and engaging for the general public. By humanising data, Sankhyiki aims to bridge the gap between technical statistical processes and everyday citizens.

Sankhyiki will be actively used in National Sample Surveys (NSS), awareness programmes, educational material, digital platforms, and public events. Through these channels, the mascot will encourage public participation, promote statistical literacy, and strengthen trust in official data.

The launch of the new logo and mascot is significant because it supports transparent, data-driven governance. By improving visibility and public understanding of official statistics, MoSPI seeks to ensure that citizens recognise the role of data in shaping policies related to health, education, employment, infrastructure, and economic growth.

About the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI)

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is an executive ministry of the Government of India responsible for ensuring the coverage, quality, and credibility of official statistics through scientifically designed surveys and data systems.

MoSPI functions through two major wings. The Statistics Wing, known as the National Statistical Office (NSO), coordinates statistical activities across the country and sets statistical standards. The Programme Implementation (PI) Wing monitors infrastructure projects and oversees the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) through its divisions, including the Infrastructure and Project Monitoring Division (IPMD).

The ministry is currently headed by the Minister of State (Independent Charge), Rao Inderjit Singh, who represents the Gurgaon constituency in Haryana.
