The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amazon Seller Services in New Delhi to support artisans enrolled under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme. This partnership aims to improve online market access and help artisans reach customers across India. And also to promote traditional crafts through digital platforms.
Background
The PM Vishwakarma Scheme, launched in September 2023, is designed to support artisans working in traditional trades.
- These include carpenters, potters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, tailors, toy makers, basket makers, and several others.
- The scheme offers training, modern toolkits, financial assistance, and market linkages to improve the livelihood of artisans.
- Many artisans face difficulties in finding stable markets and adapting to online selling.
- The new MoU with Amazon aims to reduce these challenges by connecting skilled craftsmen directly to customers through digital platforms.
What the Partnership Includes
Under the agreement, Amazon will help Vishwakarma artisans in several ways,
- Onboarding eligible artisans onto its e-commerce platform
- Giving visibility to handmade products through the Amazon Karigar initiative
- Providing digital tools and guidance for online selling
- Supporting artisans in managing product listings, packaging, and delivery
- The Ministry will assist artisans in completing paperwork such as approvals, registrations, and other necessary documentation.
Context of the MoU
India has a rich tradition of handmade crafts, but many artisans struggle to reach wider markets. Physical sales alone often limit their income and growth. E-commerce platforms can help these artisans move from local to national markets.
The partnership aligns with efforts to modernise traditional trades and give artisans better earning opportunities. It also supports the government’s vision of strengthening local products and boosting rural entrepreneurship.
Objectives of the Collaboration
The main goals of the MoU are simple and focused,
- To increase the online presence of Vishwakarma artisans
- To improve the sales of handmade products through better visibility
- To support artisans in using digital tools and online platforms
- To build strong market linkages for long-term income growth
- To preserve and promote India’s traditional craftsmanship
