Nagauri Pan Methi Receives PPVFRA Patent for Farmers

The Nagauri Pan Methi from Rajasthan’s Nagaur district has been granted a patent by the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Authority (PPVFRA). This registration was officially published in the Plant Variety Journal in the month February 2026. This is recognizing the crop under the community farmers variety category. Nagauri Pan Methi is a unique variety of fenugreek cultivated exclusively in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan.

The crop is grown across more than 7,000 hectares. And it is mainly produced in regions such as Mundwa, Nagaur, Merta City, Jayal, Degana and Khinvsar.

This crop is known as a multi cut leafy plant and also meaning farmers can harvest its leaves multiple times during a single season.

This leaves are dried naturally in the sun and then sold in the market as a highly valued spice ingredient.

High Income Potential of Nagauri Pan Methi for Farmers

The Nagauri Pan Methi crop provides significant income to farmers.

And it also making it one of the most profitable agricultural products in that region.

In each harvest cycle the farmers get about 175 kilograms of dried leaves per acre and also generating an income of approximately ₹25,000 every ten days.

Since the crop allows up to ten harvests in one season the farmers can earn nearly ₹2.5 lakh per acre annually.

During the 2024-25 agricultural season the farmers in Nagaur produced nearly 30,000 metric tonnes of dried Nagauri Pan Methi and also generating a total income of around ₹450 crore.

The PPVFRA patent for Nagauri Pan Methi provides multiple benefits for farmers by protecting their traditional agricultural knowledge and crop varieties.

Earlier this crop lacked intellectual property protection and was often sold in markets under different names such as Kasuri Methi by traders.

With the legal recognition the farmers now gain protection against biopiracy, unauthorized seed sales and misuse of the crop’s genetic resources.

The registration also enables farmers to claim benefit sharing from commercial use or research involving the crop variety.

Future Prospects: GI Tag and Export Opportunities

Following the Nagauri Pan Methi PPVFRA registration that efforts are now underway to strengthen the crop’s market value and recognition.

Field Experts have suggested pursuing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to highlight the crop’s unique regional identity.

Other proposed steps include developing food safety standards through the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and with this creating a dedicated HSN code for exports.
