NGEL Signs MoU With RVUNL To Develop Renewable Energy & Green Hydrogen Projects

On March 10th, 2024, both NTPC and its renewable energy arm NGEL signed non-binding MoUs with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) in Jaipur. These agreements represent a significant stride towards improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the Chhabra Thermal Power Plant. The focus lies on exploring avenues for integrating supercritical units into the current infrastructure to modernize and enhance power generation.

Renovation and Modernization (R&M) Initiative

  • NTPC and its affiliates will undertake a 15-year to 20-year annuity-based R&M project for older thermal units of RVUNL.
  • The goal is to revamp existing units to meet contemporary efficiency and sustainability standards.

Venturing into Renewable Energy

  • NGEL, NTPC’s renewable energy arm, and RVUNL have partnered to develop Renewable Energy Projects in Rajasthan.
  • Target capacity of up to 25 GW, showcasing a significant commitment to green energy generation.
  • Development of Green Hydrogen Derivatives with a capacity of up to 1 million tons aligns with global trends towards cleaner fuel alternatives.

High-profile Signing Ceremony

  • The MoUs were formalized at a prestigious signing ceremony held at the Chief Minister’s Office in Rajasthan.
  • Presence of esteemed dignitaries including Chief Minister Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma and Union Ministers.
  • Despite being virtual, the event underscored the significance of the agreements.

NTPC’s Vision for the Future

  • NTPC aims to significantly expand its non-fossil-based capacity to 45%-50% of its total portfolio by 2032.
  • This includes the addition of 60 GW of renewable energy capacity.
  • The MoUs represent a collaborative effort towards achieving India’s energy goals and driving economic growth in Rajasthan.
