In a significant move to improve urban mobility and reduce congestion in the National Capital Region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two major highway projects on August 17, 2025. The projects—Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway—are part of the government’s mission to deliver world-class infrastructure, improve traffic flow, and enhance connectivity in and around Delhi.
A Big Boost to Delhi-NCR Connectivity
The two projects carry a combined cost of Rs 11,000 crore and are expected to cut travel time by 40–60% between key points such as the Indira Gandhi International Airport and southwest/northwest Delhi.
According to officials, the improved infrastructure will also help reduce traffic congestion in Delhi by nearly 50%, particularly at bottlenecks like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and along the Inner and Outer Ring Roads.
Urban Extension Road-II: A Semi-Circular Bypass
The UER-II is a six-lane, 75-km-long expressway that begins at NH-44, passes through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Dwarka, and ends at the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway (NH-48) near Mahipalpur. This western semi-circular bypass is set to dramatically streamline freight and passenger traffic across NCR.

Dwarka Expressway – Delhi Section Now Open
The 10.1-km Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway was also inaugurated. Developed at a cost of Rs 5,360 crore, this section will greatly improve connectivity to areas like Yashobhoomi convention centre, Dwarka Metro stations, Bijwasan railway hub, and the Dwarka cluster Bus Depot.
Breakdown of the Section
- 5.9 km from Shiv Murti to Road Under Bridge, Dwarka Sector-21
- 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 to Delhi-Haryana Border
- Links Dwarka Expressway with UER-II, forming an integrated expressway network
- This complements the 19-km Haryana section, which was inaugurated in March 2024, completing a major phase of the Dwarka Expressway corridor.

Officials confirmed that both projects emphasized sustainability and environmental preservation. Measures taken include,
