Rajasthan’s First Namo Biodiversity Park Inaugurated in Alwar

In a significant step toward strengthening India’s green infrastructure, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, inaugurated Rajasthan’s first Namo Biodiversity Park—also called ‘NAMO VAN’—at Pratap Bandh, Alwar, on 5 October 2025. The inauguration was marked by a symbolic tree plantation ceremony and attended by Shri Sanjay Sharma, Cabinet Minister, Government of Rajasthan. The park represents a milestone in the state’s commitment to biodiversity preservation, climate resilience, and community participation in environmental conservation.

About the Namo Biodiversity Park (Namo Van)

  • The Namo Biodiversity Park—developed as a “green lung” for the Alwar region—aims to improve local air quality, enhance urban green cover, and restore ecological balance.
  • According to the Ministry, the park has been envisioned not merely as a recreational zone but as a model of urban ecological development, promoting coexistence between humans and nature.

Objectives of the Park

  • To serve as a natural carbon sink and mitigate local air pollution.
  • To preserve native flora and fauna of the Aravalli ecosystem.
  • To raise environmental awareness among citizens and students.
  • To inspire eco-friendly lifestyles through community engagement and educational programs.

Key Features and Design Elements

The Namo Biodiversity Park is designed to integrate sustainability, education, and ecology through several key features,

  • Native Tree Plantation: Focus on indigenous species from the Aravalli range to ensure ecological compatibility and water efficiency.
  • Green Corridors: Walkways and eco-trails for visitors to connect with nature.
  • Educational Zones: Awareness centres to inform visitors about biodiversity, climate change, and sustainable living.
  • Water Conservation Measures: Inclusion of rainwater harvesting systems and green landscaping techniques.

These features aim to create an urban ecological model that balances conservation with accessibility.

Significance for Rajasthan and India’s Climate Goals

Rajasthan, known for its arid climate and fragile ecosystems, faces challenges of deforestation, desertification, and air pollution. The establishment of the Namo Biodiversity Park in Alwar helps address these issues by,

  • Increasing tree density and reducing heat island effects.
  • Supporting wildlife habitats and pollinator species.
  • Acting as a climate adaptation measure in line with India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.
  • Contributing to the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement, which promotes sustainable living practices.

This initiative aligns with the broader vision of ‘Mission LiFE’, launched by the Government of India to encourage environmentally responsible behaviour.
