Rashtrapati Bhavan Hosts Artists-in-Residence Programme to Promote Folk Art

In a vibrant celebration of India’s cultural diversity, a group of renowned Madhubani and Gond artists are showcasing their traditional art forms at the Rashtrapati Bhavan as part of a special week-long Artists-in-Residence programme, also known as Kala Utsav. This initiative highlights the rich folk and tribal artistic heritage of India and offers a national platform for these artisans to display their generations-old craftsmanship. President Droupadi Murmu personally interacted with the artists and commended their contribution to preserving India’s indigenous visual arts.

The event is in the news because The Kala Utsav began on May 20, 2025, and is being held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu met with the participating artists on May 26, 2025, and witnessed the artworks created during their stay. The programme recognizes and promotes India’s traditional art forms, especially Gond art from Madhya Pradesh and Madhubani art from Bihar.

Gond Artists (Madhya Pradesh)

• Durgabai Vyam, Subhash Vyam, Nankusia Shyam, Ram Singh Urveti, Dilip Shyam, Champakali, Heeraman Urvety, Japani Shyam Dhurwey.
