The Government of India has appointed the Famous Sand artist Mr. Sudarshan Pattnaik as the brand ambassador for Census 2027. Announcement made by the Ministry of Home Affairs and it aims to encourage the citizen to participate in the country’s first-ever digital census. He is known worldwide for his impactful sand art and he will use his creativity to the spread awareness about the significance of census data. And with this it also motivate people across the India to actively participate in the nationwide exercise.
Who is Sudarshan Pattnaik?
He is an internationally acclaimed sand artist from the State of Odisha. He is also widely recognized for the blending art with social awareness and drives.
He was also honored with the Padma Shri Awards in the year 2014 for his contribution to art and public messaging via unique art work.
He had also created the Guinness World Record by building the world’s largest sandcastle which was 48 feet 8 inches at the Puri beach in 2017.
Over the years his artwork has highlighted the key issues like climate change, COVID-19 awareness so making him an ideal choice to represent India’s big Census 2027.
About the Census 2027
The launch of the Census 2027 hints the major transformation in how the India can collects and manages demographic data.
For the first time the enumerators will use the smartphone based mobile applications instead of the traditional paperwork methods.
This digital shift is expected to improve accuracy and efficiency and also to reduce delays in data processing. And this will also ensures the real time monitoring.
Additionally the citizens can now have the option to participate via the self-enumeration portal and this feature never have been introduced before in the India’s census history.
Two Phases of Census 2027
The census will be conducted in two the structured phases and also to ensure the comprehensive data collection.
Phase I: Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO)
This first phase will run from the April to September 2026. It will focuses on collecting data related to,
- Housing conditions
- Availability of amenities
- Household assets
Also the 15-day self-enumeration window will be provided before the enumerators begin their house visits.
Phase II: Population Enumeration
It is scheduled for the February 2027 and this phase will collect the detailed individual-level data such as the,
- Demographics
- Education
- Migration patterns
- Fertility details
Key Dates and Regional Variations You Should Know
The reference date for Census 2027 is the March 1, 2027 (00:00 hours) for most of India region.
Also the October 1, 2026 for the snow-bound and non-commutable regions like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh
Different states have been assigned with the custom timelines for the house listing to ensure smooth execution.
Self-Enumeration: A First for India
One of the most important features of Census 2027 is the introduction of self-enumeration.
Citizens can now do,
- Fill their census details online
- Also to avoid waiting for enumerators
- Will ensure data accuracy by entering information themselves
The portal and mobile app will be available in to the 16 languages and will be making it accessible across the diverse population in India.
