Srikrishna Museum in Kurukshetra to Get New Wing 

In a major boost to heritage tourism and cultural education, the Srikrishna Museum in Kurukshetra is set to expand with a new fourth block, adding to its rich legacy dedicated to Lord Krishna and the Mahabharata. The initiative by the Kurukshetra Development Board (KDB) aims to reinvigorate the museum experience, attract more tourists, and highlight the spiritual and historical landscape of 48-kos Kurukshetra.

A Museum Rooted in Epic History

Background

The Srikrishna Museum is one of India’s only dedicated museums to Lord Krishna, showcasing his various avatars and the cultural context of the Mahabharata era. Established in 1987, the museum moved to its current building in 1991. Since then, it has seen two expansions: a second block in 1995, and a third in 2012.

Currently, the museum houses nine galleries across three buildings, displaying,

• Sculptures and paintings related to Lord Krishna
• Artefacts from archaeological excavations
• Multimedia installations on Krishna’s life and teachings

However, despite Kurukshetra’s religious significance and a large influx of pilgrims, the museum has been drawing a modest footfall of just over 1,000 visitors per day, prompting the need for rejuvenation.

What’s New in the Fourth Block?

Planned Features

The upcoming fourth block is part of a master plan to revitalize the museum experience. The block will follow the same architectural style as existing buildings and feature three new galleries,

• Sites of Mahabharata Times: Displaying historically and archaeologically significant locations from the epic.
• 48-Kos Kurukshetra: Highlighting tirthas (pilgrimage spots), cultural artefacts, and the religious significance of this sacred geography.
• Krishna Bhakti Movement: Showcasing the spiritual legacy and propagation of Lord Krishna’s teachings through art, music, and devotion.

In addition, the extension will include,

• Replicas of Krishna-Vishnu temples across India
• An outdoor theme-based entertainment zone inspired by Mahabharata events
• Use of modern technology and interactive exhibits to engage younger audiences

The block is designed not only to increase footfall but also to deliver authentic cultural narratives, as emphasized by museum curator Balwan Singh and KDB honorary secretary Upender Singhal.

Funding and Planning

The drawing for the fourth block is in the final stages, being prepared by the Chief Architect’s Office, Haryana. Once approved, a consultant will be appointed, and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be submitted to,

• Haryana Government for administrative approval
• Union Ministry of Culture for financial assistance
• The expansion aligns with Haryana’s larger goals of cultural preservation, religious tourism, and inclusive heritage experiences.
