Tata Electronics, Merck Team Up for Semiconductor Growth

Tata Electronics Private Limited and Merck have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen India’s semiconductor and electronics manufacturing capabilities. This major collaboration supports India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor hub, aligning with the India Semiconductor Mission. The partnership brings together world-class expertise in materials, technology, and manufacturing standards to build a resilient and advanced semiconductor ecosystem in the country.

Key Areas of Collaboration

Advanced Materials and AI Integration

Merck will provide Tata Electronics with a comprehensive range of semiconductor-related solutions for its upcoming fabrication plant (Fab) in Dholera, Gujarat. These include,

  • High-purity electronic materials
  • Gas and chemical delivery systems
  • Turnkey fabrication infrastructure
  • AI-powered Material Intelligence solutions

Merck will also enable Tata to access Athinia®, a secure industry-wide data collaboration platform, for real-time analytics and performance optimization.

Manufacturing and Safety Standards

  • Both companies have agreed to share best practices in safety protocols, manufacturing excellence, and quality assurance. These steps aim to ensure world-class standards and operational reliability at the Dholera Fab.

Ecosystem and Talent Development

  • The agreement extends to building the raw material supply chain and warehousing capabilities within India. This will reduce import dependence and encourage local sourcing.
  • Tata and Merck also plan to invest in talent development through skilling programs and the creation of industry benchmarks, vital for a sustainable semiconductor future.

India’s First Chip Fab

  • Tata Electronics is investing ₹91,000 crore (USD 11 billion) to develop India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera. The Fab will produce advanced chips for automotive, mobile devices, AI systems, and other global applications.
