In a significant step towards eradicating tuberculosis (TB), Telangana launched the “Project Swasthya Nagaram,” a unique model for TB-free municipalities, on July 24, 2024, in Hyderabad. This initiative, a collaborative effort by the State Tuberculosis Cell, Municipal Corporations of Peerzadiguda, Boduppal, and Pocharam in Medchal Malkajgiri district, along with the Central TB Division, WHO India, USAID, and other stakeholders, aims to achieve TB-free municipalities through an innovative approach.
Comprehensive Approach to TB Elimination
The project targets urban settings, where social determinants significantly impact the TB burden. It emphasizes a holistic approach encompassing surveillance, prevention, and the complete cascade of quality TB care. This model aims to reduce TB incidence by one-third and decrease TB-related mortality over a period of three years.
Key Features and Implementation
- Stakeholder Collaboration: The project involves multiple stakeholders, including the Union, Programme Director Dr. Jyoti Jaju, who highlighted the importance of this initiative in promoting community well-being.
- Active Screening and Diagnosis: The project will use a digital app for active TB screening and employ X-ray and molecular tests for early diagnosis and prevention.
- Free Medical Care and Counseling: Patients will receive free medical care, and their families will be provided with counseling.
Launch and Future Goals
Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare and Managing Director of the National Health Mission, RV Karnan, formally launched the project. The initiative is expected to serve as a model for ending TB in urban settings and promoting community health.
