Trinidad and Tobago became the eighth country in the world—and the first in the Caribbean—to offer UPI (Unified Payments Interface) services for Indian travelers. This move will allow Indian visitors to make payments directly in rupees using their mobile UPI apps. The launch was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the country.
What Is UPI and Why Is It Important?
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is a fast and secure digital payment system developed in India. It allows people to send or receive money using just a mobile phone and internet connection. Now, with UPI available in other countries, Indian tourists don’t need cash or forex cards to shop or dine abroad. They can simply scan a QR code and pay from their Indian bank accounts.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) manages UPI and is working with international partners to expand UPI globally. This helps make travel easier and cheaper for Indians, reducing the need for currency exchanges and credit card charges.
Where Else Is UPI Available Abroad?
With Trinidad and Tobago joining, UPI is now live in eight countries,
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
- Singapore
- France
- Bhutan
- Nepal
- Sri Lanka
- Mauritius
- Trinidad and Tobago
In these countries, Indian travelers can use apps like BHIM or other UPI-enabled apps to scan QR codes at local partner shops and pay directly in INR. The merchant receives the money in local currency, and the system handles the currency conversion.
How to Use UPI in Other Countries
To use UPI abroad, follow these simple steps,
- Install a UPI-enabled app (like BHIM or PhonePe).
- Link your Indian bank account to the app.
- Enable international roaming on your mobile to receive OTPs.
- Make sure your bank and app support UPI Global.
While shopping, just scan the UPI Global QR code, enter the amount, and authenticate with your UPI PIN. The payment is instant and secure. Apps also let you set spending limits or turn off global payments when not needed.
Are There Any Charges?
According to NPCI, small foreign UPI payments may have a small conversion charge, but it’s less than credit/debit card fees. This makes UPI a cheaper and more convenient option for Indian tourists.
NPCI also said that more countries in Europe and the Caribbean may soon join the UPI network, giving Indian users more global payment options.
