The Birth of Odisha: India’s First Linguistic State
The State of Odisha holds the most unique place in Indian history because it is the first state which had formed on the linguistic basis. On the 1st of April in 1936 state was carved out as the separate province to unite the Odia-speaking regions.
This historic achievement was happened because of the decades of struggle was led by the visionaries like Madhusudan Das and Gopabandhu Das.
Their efforts have ensured that the Odia language and the identity were to be protected from being overshadowed during colonial rule.
Earlier the new province included only six districts and they are Cuttack, Puri, Baleswar, Sambalpur, Koraput and Ganjam and with this it laying the foundation for modern day Odisha.

During the medieval and colonial periods Odisha also faced the fragmentation. After the fall of King Mukunda Deva in 1568 the region came under the control of Mughals, Marathas and also to the British.
Under the British rule Odia-speaking areas were divided across the different provinces and it also threatens the survival of the language and culture. This will led to the strong demand for the unified linguistic state. And they have ultimately achieved in the 1936.
Movement for Odisha Statehood: A Fight for Identity
The demand for the separate Odisha state had gained the momentum in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The formation of the Utkal Sammilani in 1903 which is led by Madhusudan Das and he played the crucial role to mobilizing the public support.
Several leaders have argued that language is the foundation of the identity and governance and also emphasized that without the separate province the Odia language risk to decline.
The continuous and hard efforts from the reformers, intellectuals and citizens role finally led to the creation of Odisha.
