Vishu is a major Hindu festival celebrated mostly in Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu. It marks the Malayalam New Year and the beginning of a fresh start. People welcome the day with joy, traditional rituals and prayers. Let’s learn more about the date, history, meaning and celebrations of Vishu 2025.
Vishu 2025 – Date and Time
In 2025, Vishu will be celebrated on Monday, April 14. According to the Drik Panchang, the most important ritual time, called Vishu Kani, should be seen at 03:30 AM. This early morning sight is considered lucky for the whole year.
What is Vishu?
Vishu is also known as the Malayalam New Year. The word “Vishu” comes from Sanskrit and means equal, as the day is close to the spring equinox- a time when day and night are nearly equal in length. The festival marks the Sun’s movement into Mesha Rashi (Aries) in astrology, which is seen as a time of new beginnings.
Mythological Story Behind Vishu
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day. This story shows the victory of good over evil and is an important part of the festival’s message.
Vishu Kani, the Most Important Ritual
One of the most important parts of Vishu is Vishu Kani, which means “the first thing seen in the morning.” It is believed that seeing something good first thing in the morning brings luck, happiness and prosperity throughout the year.
A special display called Vishukkani is arranged. It includes:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Golden flowers (Konna flowers)
- Coins and currency
- Traditional metal mirror (Valakku)
- Holy book (like Bhagavad Gita)
- Lamp (Nilavilakku)
All these items are placed in a metal vessel called Uruli and kept in front of the idol of Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna.
How Vishu is Celebrated?
Families wake up early and go to see the Vishukhani with closed eyes, guided by elders. People wear new clothes called Kaineettam, and elders give money to younger family members. The day also includes:
- Visiting temples
- Bursting firecrackers
- Preparing a special feast called Sadya
- Spending time with family
