What Is ‘Jore Sahib’? Sacred Sikh Relics Begin Yatra to Patna Sahib

The ‘Jore Sahib’, sacred footwear of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, and his wife Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, is embarking on a historic religious journey — the Guru Charan Yatra. After being preserved for over 300 years by the family of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the relics were handed over to the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) at Gurdwara Moti Bagh in Delhi.

The Relics and Their Historical Journey

• The Jore Sahib, also referred to as “Charan Suhawa”, holds immense spiritual and historical value in Sikh tradition.
• Verified to be 300 years old by India’s Ministry of Culture, the relics were previously under the guardianship of the Puri family, passed down through generations.
• After the death of the last custodian, Jasmeet Singh Puri, the family chose to institutionalise the relics for public veneration.

Significance of ‘Jore Sahib’

• Meaning: In Punjabi, “jore” means “pair” and “sahib” is a title of respect.
• Spiritual Value: These relics are believed to carry the spiritual energy of the Gurus and represent a direct physical link to their lives.
• Symbolism: They inspire values of righteousness, courage, and service, embodying the teachings of Sikhism.

The Guru Charan Yatra: Route and Dates

The Guru Charan Yatra begins October 23 and concludes on November 1 at Takht Sri Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Spiritual and Cultural Importance

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged devotees to witness the relics during the yatra, calling it a “pathway to deeper spiritual connection with Sikh ideals.” A special kirtan samagam was organised at Moti Bagh for the occasion.
• Patna Sahib already houses other historic belongings of Guru Gobind Singh, including his robe, dagger, and child-size sword. The addition of Jore Sahib further enhances its status as a spiritual centre for Sikh heritage.

Community and Institutional Support

• A special committee of Sikh leaders, including academics, artists, and public figures, was formed to oversee the transition. The relics are also referenced in Mahakosh, the authoritative Sikh encyclopedia by Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha.
• This transfer marks a significant cultural event, symbolising continuity, reverence, and the preservation of Sikh legacy.
