Asia has some of the largest and most powerful air bases in the world. These places are not just for parking aircraft; they are busy centres of defence, training, rescue missions, and emergency help. Such stations have long runways, huge hangars, and advanced systems to manage many planes at once. One of these bases is famous for being the biggest in the entire continent.
Biggest Air Force Station in Asia
Hindon Air Force Station in Uttar Pradesh, India, is the biggest air force station in Asia. It comes under the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force. Spread over a vast area near Ghaziabad, close to Delhi, this base is one of the most important defence centres of the country.
Location of Hindon Air Force Station
Hindon is located on the outskirts of Delhi, near the Hindon River. Because of this, it can protect the National Capital Region very quickly. Aircraft from Hindon can reach the skies over Delhi in just a few minutes. This makes it extremely valuable for national security.
Home of Powerful Aircraft
Hindon houses some of the most advanced transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force. It is the main base for the C-17 Globemaster and the C-130J Super Hercules. These aircraft are used for heavy airlift, disaster relief, troop movement, and special missions. They form the backbone of India’s strategic air power.
Air Force Day Celebrations
Since 2006, Hindon has been the venue for the annual Air Force Day Parade on 8 October. Earlier, this event was held in Delhi. Shifting it to Hindon provided more airspace for displays and avoided disruption to civilian flights. Every year, the base hosts grand fly-pasts and ceremonies.
From Fighter Base to Modern Hub
In earlier years, Hindon was home to fighter aircraft like MiG jets. Due to safety issues, it was later turned mainly into a transport and helicopter base. With rising security needs, it was modernised and reactivated as a strategic hub. New runways, hangars, and advanced facilities were added.
Civil Enclave at Hindon
Hindon also serves civilians through a special civil terminal operated by the Airports Authority of India. This allows regional flights under the UDAN scheme, helping people from nearby cities travel easily. Even with civilian use, the base remains under strong control of the Indian Air Force.
Significance of Hindon Air Force Station
Hindon is not just large in size; it is large in importance. It guards the capital, supports emergency missions, hosts national events, and operates powerful aircraft. Because of these reasons, Hindon Air Force Station proudly holds the title of the biggest air force station in Asia.
