The Earth is full of amazing natural wonders, and many of them are hidden deep under the oceans. Beneath the water, there are huge mountains, long ridges, and mysterious landscapes that most people never get to see. These underwater features stretch across great distances and help shape our planet. One special underwater mountain range is known for being the longest of all, making it truly remarkable.
Longest Underwater Mountain Range on the Earth
The world’s longest mountain range is called the Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR), and it is completely underwater. It stretches for more than 65,000 kilometres, making it the largest continuous mountain system on Earth. This huge chain runs like a long seam around the globe through the major oceans.
How the Mid-Ocean Ridge is Formed?
The Mid-Ocean Ridge is created where tectonic plates move apart. As these plates slowly separate, hot molten rock (magma) rises from below and cools to form new ocean floor. This natural process is known as seafloor spreading, and it keeps adding fresh crust to the ocean bottom.
A Giant Volcanic Feature Underwater
The MOR is the biggest volcanic feature on the planet. Along its path, there are many underwater volcanoes and long cracks in the seafloor. Most of Earth’s volcanic activity actually happens here, far below the ocean surface.
Home to Unique Deep-Sea Life
One of the most special things about the MOR is its hydrothermal vents, which release very hot, mineral-rich water. These vents support rare sea creatures like giant tube worms and special shrimp that survive without sunlight. Instead of photosynthesis, these organisms depend on chemosynthesis, a process powered by chemicals from the vents.
Amazing Facts About the Mid-Ocean Ridge
Here are some interesting facts about longest underwater mountain range on the Earth:
- It covers around 23% of Earth’s surface.
- Some parts spread very slowly (1 cm per year), while others spread faster (up to 20 cm per year).
- In slow-spreading sections, deep rift valleys form, similar to the Grand Canyon.
- Iceland is the only place where the ridge comes above sea level.
- It has caused some of the strongest underwater earthquakes in the world.
Largest Underwater Mountain in the World
The biggest underwater mountain is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Though only a part of it rises above the ocean, its total height from the ocean floor is over 10,000 metres, making it even taller than Mount Everest when measured from base to peak.
Longest Mountain Range Overall
While the Mid-Ocean Ridge is the longest underwater and overall mountain range, the Andes Mountains in South America are the longest mountain range found on land, covering about 7,000 kilometres.
