India and Vietnam have strengthened the cooperation in tribal and ethnic development. This coming after the high-level ministerial meeting was held in New Delhi on March 20, 2026. The meeting aimed to deepen the partnership under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and expand engagement in inclusive development. Both countries also discussed to sharing the best practices, promoting livelihoods, and preserving cultural heritage.
High-Level India-Vietnam Meeting
The meeting was co-chaired by Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram and From Vietnam’s Side Minister Dao Ngoc Dung Attended.
This is marking an important step in elevating bilateral cooperation.
It also followed earlier discussions held between senior officials and will be ensuring continuity and structured dialogue between both nations.
The ministerial engagement aimed to institutionalize cooperation and bring leadership-level focus to tribal and ethnic development.
Focus on Cultural and Strategic Ties
India highlighted the Vietnam as a key partner under its Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision.
The discussions emphasized deep-rooted cultural and historical connections and will be including shared Buddhist traditions and old civilizational links.
A important example of people-to-people connection was the exhibition of Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha from Sarnath in Vietnam, This relics attracted large participation.
These cultural exchanges play an important role in strengthening mutual trust and diplomatic partnership.

Both countries identified several priority areas to enhance cooperation in tribal and ethnic development.

Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Strategy
India’s Act East Policy continues to play the crucial role in strengthening ties with Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam.
The policy focuses on enhancing economic, cultural and also strategic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
