1. Anti-Dumping Duty on Optical Fiber Imports proposed by DGTR
The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), which is a branch of the commerce ministry, has proposed the implementation of an anti-dumping tax on a specific type of optical fiber imported from China, Korea, and Indonesia to protect the local industry from low-priced foreign shipments. After investigating the dumped imports of “dispersion unshifted single-mode optical fiber” from these countries, DGTR has suggested the duty.
2. Supreme Court Rules Delhi Government has Control Over IAS and All Services in Delhi except Land, Police, and Law and Order
In a significant judgment, the Supreme Court has granted control over all services in the national capital, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), to the Delhi government, except for those related to land, police, and law and order. The Constitution Bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha passed a unanimous judgment on the matter.

3. India, Canada agree to increase discussions on movement of skilled professionals, students
India and Canada have agreed to ramp up their discussions on the movement of skilled professionals and students to enhance their bilateral economic partnership. This decision was made during the sixth India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment, where Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and his Canadian counterpart Mary Ng reviewed the progress of the seven rounds of negotiations towards an early harvest trade deal.

4. Puma appoints Karthik Balagopalan as new MD for India
Sportswear retailer Puma has appointed Karthik Balagopalan as the new Managing Director of PUMA India. He earlier served as Global Director Retail and e-commerce at the company. He will succeed Abhishek Ganguly, who worked for PUMA’s Indian business for 17 years and has been the Managing Director of PUMA India since 2014. Ganguly is set to pursue a career as an entrepreneur in his own venture. Balagopalan will report to Puma CEO Arne Freundt and will be based in Bengaluru.
5. Ayushmann Khurrana Joins Indian Team as Ambassador for Special Olympics Journey to Berlin
Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana has been chosen to inspire and support the Indian contingent participating in the upcoming Special Olympics for individuals with intellectual disabilities, set to take place in Berlin from June 16 to June 25. 6. NIIF appoints Rajiv Dhar as CEO & MD on interim basis
National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited (NIIFL) has appointed Rajiv Dhar, Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer as the Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of NIIFL on an interim basis, effective May 11, 2023. The planned succession follows Sujoy Bose’s request to relieve him from his current responsibilities as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, a position he held since 2016 in the company. NIIFL manages over $4.3 billion of equity capital commitments across its three funds – Master Fund, Fund of Funds, and Strategic Opportunities Fund. NIIF Fund of Funds (FoF) is focused on building a portfolio of private equity funds across diversified sectors and investment strategies.
7. Alia Bhatt appointed as first Indian Global Ambassador of Gucci
Gucci, the luxury fashion brand from Italy, has appointed Alia Bhatt as its first global ambassador from India. She will debut as the brand’s newest global ambassador at the Gucci Cruise 2024 show in Seoul next week. This appointment is an important moment for both the brand and the Indian fashion industry, especially since it comes after Bhatt’s Met Gala debut.

8. Ministry of Ayush and ICMR sign an MoU to promote and collaborate on integrative health research
The Ministry of Ayush and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote and collaborate on integrative health research. This cooperation is a significant step towards providing scientific evidence to the Ayush system of medicines and creating a niche for traditional medicine knowledge. The MoU will focus on identified areas of national importance in healthcare, promoting high-impact research to generate evidence utilizing modern scientific methods. The cooperation will also strengthen research capacity through the training of Ayush researchers.
9. Deadline for Linking PAN with Aadhaar Extended to 30 June 2023: PFRDA
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has extended the deadline for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar to 30 June 2023. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has also extended the date for PAN-Aadhaar linking till this date. The PFRDA has warned that failure to link PAN with Aadhaar by the deadline will result in restrictions on transactions in one’s National Pension System (NPS) account. As PAN is a key identification number and part of the Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for NPS accounts, all intermediaries are required to ensure valid KYC for all subscribers.

11. WHO declares an end to global health emergency for mpox
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on May 11 that the global health emergency for mpox, a viral disease formerly known as monkeypox, has ended after 10 months. This came after confirmed cases in over 100 countries since the disease started spreading globally in May 2022. The emergency committee of the WHO made the recommendation to end the health emergency, and WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the decision during a press conference.

13. International Day of Plant Health 2023 celebrates on 12th May
The United Nations designated 12 May the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment, and boost economic development. The theme of this year’s celebration of International Day of Plant Health is “Plant Health for Environmental Protection,” as mentioned on the IPPC website. The IPPC is a 1951 multilateral treaty overseen by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) which formulates action plans to prevent and control the introduction and spread of pests of plants and plant products.

14. Deepika Padukone appears on cover of TIME magazine
Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has been featured on the latest cover of TIME magazine. The iconic American magazine described Padukone as a ‘global star’ bringing ‘the world to Bollywood’. It had previously named Padukone among its list of 100 most influential people in the world in 2018. Deepika is called ‘the most popular actress in the world’s most populous country’. On the cover, she is seen wearing a beige oversized suit and no shoes.
15. Cyclone Mocha: All About The Storm
Cyclone Mocha was a very severe cyclonic storm that formed in the Bay of Bengal on May 10, 2023. The storm intensified rapidly, reaching peak winds of 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour) before making landfall in Bangladesh on May 14. The storm caused widespread damage in Bangladesh and Myanmar, killing at least 100 people and displacing millions more. Cyclone Mocha was named on the basis of a suggestion made by Yemen.
16. Varanasi’s LBSI airport gets India’s first reading lounge
The Lal Bahadur Shastri International (LBSI) Airport here has become the first in India to have a reading lounge. Apart from books on Kashi, the lounge`s library has a collection of literature and books in many international languages besides books of youth authors published under Prime Minister Yuva Yojana. The Varanasi airport has become the first airport in the country to have a free reading lounge. The lounge has been established with the assistance of National Book Trust (NBT), an Indian publishing house and autonomous body under the ministry of education of the Union government.
