Seven train stations that have been recognized due to their unique architectural designs, urban planning, and integration into their environments have been chosen for the Prix Versailles 2026 competition. Announced at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, these stations represent the countries of Italy, Saudi Arabia, Australia, France, and the USA. These include stations that range from those having ancient Roman ruins below the surface to the ones designed after mountains and deserts.

1. Monte Sant’Angelo Station – Naples, Italy
Monte Sant’Angelo Station in Naples has been designed by Anish Kapoor and Future Systems. This station has been envisaged as an impressive underground sculpture.
Passengers travel down about 48 metres using impressive Corten steel and aluminium cut-outs. The design concept of the station has been inspired by the cavernous terrain that surrounds the Mount Vesuvius.
2. Colosseo–Fori Imperiali Station – Rome, Italy
Colosseo–Fori Imperiali Station is located in Rome and integrates the idea of public transport and archaeology.
The station is located about 30 metres below the ancient rock and uses the archaeological ruins excavated at this site. There is an oculus at the interchange level, which is directed towards the Colosseum.
3. National Museum Station – Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
The design of the National Museum Station in Riyadh was done by Arup. The design of this station is derived from the topographical design of Tuwaiq Mountain.
It has a carved concrete facade with triangular-shaped openings that resemble the Najdi style. Light from these openings gives changing pattern of illumination inside the blue station.
4. Town Hall Station – Melbourne, Australia
The design of Melbourne’s Town Hall Station is characterized by vast underground spaces that have been designed to create an open feel.
The station was designed by Hassell, RSHP and WW+P. It is equipped with tree-like structural supports and 10 metre high copper-vaulted ceilings.
5. Western Station – Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Western Station in Riyadh was designed by Omrania and has been inspired visually by desert dunes.
The design has curved roofs and sand colored panels to represent the surrounding landscape. It brings together transport facilities with gardens, shopping areas, pedestrian plazas and mosques.
6. Lyon Part-Dieu Station – Lyon, France
The newly-designed Lyon Part-Dieu Station was created by AREP and L’AUC to ensure better connectivity of neighbouring districts.
Its key characteristic is the multi-storey gallery which is based on the idea of traboules, which are covered passages characteristic for the city of Lyon. The station boasts a huge bike parking place, making it a friendly place for pedestrians and cyclists.
7. LAX/Metro Transit Center – Los Angeles, United States
The LAX/Metro Transit Center located in Los Angeles spreads on about 11 acres and was designed by Grimshaw, Gruen Associates and Arup.
This well-lit station links the rail system of Los Angeles County with the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The focus of the design was on better connecting regional transportation with the airport.
