India to Host the Formal Meetings of the COP9’s Fund Approval Committee

India is set to host the 2nd Formal Meeting of the COP9 (Conference of Parties) Bureau and the 3rd Formal Meeting of the Fund Approval Committee under the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) International Convention against Doping in Sport on September 17-18, 2024, in New Delhi. 

What is the International Convention against Doping in Sport?

The purpose of this Convention, within the framework of the strategy and programme of activities of UNESCO in the area of physical education and sport, is to promote the prevention of and the fight against doping in sport, with a view to its elimination. 

What to expect?

• As Vice-Chairperson of the COP9 Bureau, India has taken the lead in organizing these high-level gatherings, which will bring together key decision-makers and dignitaries from across the world.
• These meetings will serve as a crucial platform for nations and international organizations to deliberate on key issues related to anti-doping measures, the promotion of fair sports practices, and fostering global collaboration to uphold the principles of integrity in sports. 
• The discussions are expected to further strengthen international efforts to combat doping, ensuring that athletes around the world can compete in a fair and clean environment.

Participant Countries

The meetings will see participation from distinguished delegates representing countries such as France, Italy, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Barbados, Singapore, Netherlands, Türkiye, UAE, and Zambia.

Remarks 

• Dr. Mandaviya (Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports) highlighted India’s commitment to clean sport and its leading role in global anti-doping efforts. 
• He reiterated India’s philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family – and emphasized the critical role of international cooperation in safeguarding the integrity of sports for future generations.

MoU Signed

• A significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi). 
• The MoU marks a strategic collaboration between NADA and NLU Delhi to enhance cooperation in anti-doping law, policy, and education. 
• The collaboration will focus on developing joint certificate courses, academic research, and organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences to raise awareness and foster a more inclusive and informed approach to anti-doping practices.

India’s Growing Influence

• The Joint Meeting underscores growing influence in global sports governance, particularly in promoting ethical sports practices and supporting international frameworks like the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport. 
• With the hosting of these meetings, India further solidifies its position as a key player in the fight against doping, contributing to the creation of a cleaner and fairer sporting environment.
