Alfred Tyrone Cooke, 1965 War Hero and Vir Chakra Awardee, Dies

Flight Lieutenant Alfred Tyrone Cooke, a highly decorated veteran of Indian Air Force and a hero of the 1965 Indo-Pak War, passed away on Friday in Base Hospital, New Delhi. The IAF celebrated the achievements of the Vir Chakra awardee and recalled his bravery shown in a very tough aerial battle above Kalaikunda, West Bengal. It was on September 7, 1965 that Cooke was awarded the honour for his performance in this particular engagement when he, along with his wingman, faced a large force of Pakistan Air Force.

Who Was Alfred Tyrone Cooke?

Alfred Tyrone Cooke was a flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force who fought in combat operations in the 1965 war and received the Vir Chakra for this feat.
IAF described him as a war hero whose brave deeds in the conflict are remembered as part of military aviation history of India.

After retirement from the Indian Air Force, Cooke moved to Australia. He visited India to take part in some event arranged by his unit – 14 Squadron.

What Took Place during the Kalaikunda Dogfight?

The one major incident that has been linked to Cooke’s service in the armed forces occurred at Kalaikunda in the state of West Bengal on September 7, 1965.

Cooke was on combat air patrol with a fellow pilot in a Hawker Hunter aircraft. While the Pakistani Air Force carried out its second attack on the airfield, Cooke and his comrade, Flying Officer Subodh Chandra Mamgain, were forced to engage a supposedly three times stronger force than theirs.

Even as they were hugely outnumbered, Cooke and Mamgain took part in the fight, during which Cooke was said to have brought down a Pakistan Air Force Sabre jet, according to the citation of his gallantry award.

The IAF referred to the incident as Cooke’s “legendary dogfight over Kalaikunda.”

Why Did Cooke Get the Vir Chakra?

Cooke got the Vir Chakra for his deeds in the Kalaikunda air battle. The citation of his honor acknowledged his conspicuous gallantry, tactical acumen, and indifference towards his own safety during the battle.

The battle was important not only because of Cooke’s performance, but also in terms of air operations in general in the eastern sector of the 1965 war.

IAF Condolences to the War Veteran

In the wake of Cooke’s demise, the Indian Air Force offered their condolences, paying tribute to him for his contribution in the 1965 Indo-Pak War.

The IAF commended his bravery shown in the Kalaikunda battle and said that his legacy would go on to inspire generations of Air Warriors. His death also brings to light the role played by the combat pilots in India’s air operations in 1965.

Tulu Gets Second Additional Administrative Language Status in Karnataka

The Karnataka state government has made the Tulu as the second additional administrative language of the state in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. The decision was announced by the state’s Chief Minister D K Shivakumar following the state Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru on September 18, 2026. The Cabinet has also sanctioned a new tourism policy for coastal and Malnad areas with an objective of promoting tourism infrastructure and attracting investment. Some other decisions that were taken include the Karnataka Marine Biotechnology Policy 2026-31, major development schemes, and a proposal to take the views of citizens regarding the name change of the Dakshina Kannada district to Mangaluru.

Tulu to be Second Additional Administrative Language in Two Districts

The government of Karnataka has decided to implement Tulu as an additional administrative language in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.

The language is mainly spoken in these two districts of Karnataka and Kasaragod district of neighboring Kerala. The area where the language is predominantly spoken is often called Tulu Nadu.

Tulu is a Dravidian language which has its distinct linguistic and cultural identity. According to Shivakumar, there is immense scope for educational and cultural development in the language.

Tourism Policy in the Coastal and Malnad Area of Karnataka

The Cabinet also approved a tourism policy on the coastal and Malnad areas of Karnataka.

According to the policy, tourism schemes would be regarded as infrastructural schemes. The government would offer incentives that would help in the attraction of investments, especially in the area of greenfield tourism.

There would also be more time given to pay back the loan. According to Shivakumar, the long monsoon seasons could hinder tourism activities in the coastal and Malnad areas.

The government would also embark on urban development policies and incentives with respect to fisheries.

Karnataka Marine Biotechnology Policy 2026-31

The other key decision taken was the approval of Karnataka Marine Biotechnology Policy 2026-31.

As per this policy, the government aims to set up the Fisheries, Marine and Blue Economy University through upgrading of an existing college.

This new university will increase their intake from the existing 60 seats to 200 seats with emphasis on fisheries, marine biotechnology, and blue economy.

Dakshina Kannada to Be Redubbed as Mangaluru

Another key decision was that the Karnataka government is looking forward to renaming Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru district.

Shivakumar informed that the government would come out with the draft notification and seek public opinion for a month after which a final decision will be taken.

The government will take into consideration the public sentiment and associations of the district with its existing name.

Major Approvals for Development

The Cabinet gave clearance for projects worth approximately ₹32,611 crore, as per the Chief Minister.

Approximately ₹16,000 crore was sanctioned for rural development, whereas ₹16,000 crore was sanctioned for Mangaluru, Udupi and the coastal area.

The sanction for a medical college worth approximately ₹450 crore was also made. The government also referred to the need for setting up Kidwai and Jayadeva hospitals in the region.

Tamil Nadu Gold Ring Scheme 2026: Date, Eligibility and Key Details

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will inaugurate the state’s scheme of providing gold ring, called the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, for newborns on September 28, 2026. As per the scheme, the eligible babies delivered in government hospitals will be provided a gold ring of one gram. First round has 1.28 lakh gold rings ready for distribution. The scheme is applicable retroactively from June 22, 2026, which means all eligible babies delivered in government hospitals after this date will be benefited from it. The scheme integrates the Tamil tradition with the welfare scheme tied with the health sector.

What Is Tamil Nadu’s One-Gram Gold Ring Scheme?

The one-gram gold ring scheme, named Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, will provide a gold ring of one gram to eligible newborns delivered in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu.

The rings will have unique serial number, packed in tamper-proof packaging. The first batch of 1.28 lakh gold rings is already available for distribution.

“Thaimaaman” means the maternal uncle who traditionally gives the newborn a gift in gold form.

When Will the Scheme Be Launched?

Respectable Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to launch this scheme on September 28th 2026. This launch is expected to happen at the Usilampatti Government Hospital, in Madurai.

The program was scheduled to begin on September 15 but has been postponed.

For babies born from June 22 to September 27, the distribution will be done through specific centers. From September 28, the eligible babies will get the ring on their way out of the government hospital with their mother.

Who Is Eligible for the Gold Ring?

The scheme can be taken by,

Children whose mothers are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu
The eligible beneficiaries registered under the monitoring system of pregnancy and child health of the state

The government has made the scheme retroactive from June 22, 2026, the birthday of the Chief Minister.

How Much Money is Being Allotted in the Scheme?

The State Government is making an annual provision of ₹755.83 crore for the implementation of the scheme.

The amount that is being allocated will be used to cover the needs for 4.41 lakh gold rings that weigh one gram each and are 22 carats in purity in one year. First procurement will cater to 1.28 lakh rings.

There are approximately 7.8 lakh births in the state annually, and 53% of the deliveries take place in government hospitals, according to official statistics quoted by The New Indian Express.

Why Is This Scheme Referred to as Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram?

This scheme has borrowed from the culture of Thaimaaman Seer in Tamil Nadu, where it is custom for the maternal uncle to give gifts to a new-born baby.

It can be recalled that the government order released in June referred to the ring as a gift in connection with the new-born baby, motherhood, and the Thaimaaman culture.

India Ranked No. 1 in Swedish Business Climate Survey

India emerges as the top country for its business climate amongst 41 global markets in the 2026 Global Business Climate Survey by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in India (SCCI). The Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made a mention about the ranking on September 18, calling out that the business environment of India is a good performer in an uncertain global economy scenario. The survey reflects the economic and business situation prevailing in the main export markets from the point of view of Swedish companies. India also ranks among those markets that offer great growth and investment opportunities in the Asia Pacific region.

India Ranks Top in Global Business Climate Survey

The Global Business Climate Survey 2026 includes 41 markets and focuses on how Swedish companies perceive business conditions outside Sweden.

The survey helps to benchmark economic performance, expectations for the future and business environment in the key export markets of Sweden.

India ranks the highest among all the markets when it comes to business climate assessment according to the Global Business Climate Survey.

Business Optimism Highest in APAC Region

Asia-Pacific (APAC) turned out to be the most optimistic region according to the survey.

The most optimistic countries included India and Vietnam, which demonstrates positive business sentiments towards the region from Swedish companies.

Meanwhile, business sentiments varied greatly across other regions. While Middle East & Africa were less optimistic regions, the perceptions of Europe & Americas were somewhat positive compared to 2025 year.

Ireland also featured in the top list.

India Among Markets with the Higest Growth Expectations

Another important result of the survey includes India as one of the markets with the highest growth expectations.

Growth expectations of the markets were the highest in India, the Philippines and Poland.

It is clear that Swedish companies surveyed expect high growth potential in these markets even amid global uncertainties.

India was also among the leading APAC markets for investments.

44 Percent of Swedish Enterprises Have Higher Investments

On average across the surveyed markets, 44 percent of Swedish enterprises claimed they would increase their investments in 2026.

This number turned out to be somewhat smaller than in 2025, where 45 percent of Swedish enterprises claimed they would increase their investments.

This downturn was primarily connected with lower expectations regarding investments in the Americas. APAC remained almost unchanged, and India and the Philippines remained the most attractive destinations for investments.

Europe remained the laggard region when it comes to investment expectations.

Middle East War Influenced Survey Results

The survey pointed out that its results need to be considered with some reservations due to the fact that data gathering coincided with the beginning of the Middle East war on February 28, 2026.

About 75 percent of surveys were made before February 28, and 25 percent of surveys were conducted after it.

As is seen from the survey, there was an influence of the Middle East war on businesses’ perception of the business climate, industry turnover and investments.

Nevertheless, despite regional differences, 64 percent of Swedish enterprises were profitable in the surveyed markets.

Yugan Sakthivel Muthukumaar Wins Gold at ISSF Junior World Cup

The gold medal in the men’s trap event at the ISSF Junior World Cup Shotgun 2026 was bagged by Yugan Sakthivel Muthukumaar from India in Porpetto, Italy on September 18. The 15-year-old shooter fired at 27 of 30 targets in the eight-shooter final and won the gold medal. He was one target better than the Italian Francesco Tanfoglio. It was the first medal for India in the Porpetto ISSF Junior World Cup Shotgun as the women’s trap bronze medalist was Sabeera Haris, the junior Asian champion.

Yugan Sakthivel Muthukumaar Wins Men’s Trap Gold

Yugan qualified sixth for the final with a score of 114/125 and qualified for the eight-shooter medal round in a shoot-off.

In the final round, the young Indian shooter made good use of the chance by firing at 27 out of 30 targets. Italy’s Francesco Tanfoglio was one target away from him.

It was the first medal for India in the junior ISSF World Cup Shotgun held in Porpetto.

What Was the Performance of Other Indian Shooters?

Apart from these shooters, among others in the qualification rounds of the men’s trap category, Arjun and Vinay Pratap Singh Chandrawat were the top two Indian performers, who scored 112/125 and ranked 12th and 13th, respectively.

Udhav Singh Rathore made 111/125 to finish 16th.

India failed to clinch a medal in the men’s and women’s junior skeet category, as no Indian shooter qualified for the finals.

Sabeera Haris Wins Sixth Place in Women’s Trap Category

Sabeera Haris was the only Indian performer who managed to make the finals in the women’s trap category.

The junior Asian champion made it to the final ranking sixth with 108/125. She also qualified for her final round through a shoot-off.

But in the medal round, Sabeera could not maintain her qualification-round performance. She hit 9 out of 15 targets and ended up sixth.

India’s shooters Bhavya Tripathi and Krishika Joshi missed the final by scoring 105 in the qualification round, ranking ninth and tenth, respectively.

India’s Performance at the Junior ISSF World Cup 2026

The Porpetto tournament marks the second Junior ISSF World Cup in 2026. The first tournament was held in Cairo, Egypt, in April and had shooting events for rifles, pistols and shotguns.

India was the highest medal winner in the Cairo tournament, securing 16 medals, which consisted of five gold, six silver and five bronze medals.

The Indian pair of Zuhair Khan and Addya Katyal secured the only Indian medal in shotguns at the Cairo tournament.

QDENGA Dengue Vaccine: India’s First Approved Dengue Vaccine

India set to get its first approved dengue vaccine with QDENGA to be marketed in the private sector in the first six months of 2027. The vaccine, which has been developed by the Japanese drug manufacturing company, Takeda, has received marketing authorisation from the Indian Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in July 2026 for use among people aged between 4 and 60 years.

The development has increased the ways of dengue prevention, including controlling mosquitoes and minimizing exposure to Aedes mosquitoes.

What Is QDENGA?

QDENGA, also referred to as TAK-003, is a live attenuated tetravalent dengue vaccine.

It is intended to provide protection from the four types of the virus,

DENV-2
DENV-3
DENV-4

In 2024, WHO provided prequalification to QDENGA. It is given in two doses, three months apart.

According to the approved indication, it is not necessary to carry out tests on dengue infection before administering the vaccine.

Who Can Receive QDENGA in India?

In India, QDENGA has been licensed by CDSCO for use among the individuals aged 4-60 years.

But just because of such a license, this doesn’t mean all individuals aged between 4 and 60 would be able to get the vaccine. QDENGA will first become available in the private sector, and its price has not yet been disclosed.

Healthcare professionals can decide whether vaccination is necessary for the person.

DengiAll is undergoing large-scale clinical trials, and at the moment it cannot be considered an approved vaccine in India.

When Will QDENGA Be Made Available in India?

It is expected that QDENGA will be made available in India’s private market by the mid-2027, it also provided that all the local regulatory and commercial procedures have been completed successfully.

Takeda has reached an agreement with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories regarding the distribution of QDENGA in the private paediatric and adult market in India.

The cost and any future availability through public immunization programs have yet to be revealed.

Why Is QDENGA Significant?

Dengue is mainly spread through infected Aedes mosquitoes and may lead to symptoms like fever, body pain, and even severe dengue.

Vaccination would act as another prevention technique along with controlling of mosquitoes, removal of breeding sites, and protection from mosquito bites.

PM Modi Inaugurates NGT International Environment Conference 2026

Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on September 19, 2026. This two-day event will witness the participation of judges, environmentalists, government and judicial officials from 17 countries. The event is dedicated to the discussion of upcoming environmental and climate issues, environmental justice, climate governance and institutional contribution towards environmental protection and will conclude on September 20.

Details of the NGT International Conference 2026

The conference will be organised at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, from September 19 to 20, 2026.

The NGT is organising this conference to hold discussions on the issues related to environment and climate and also to promote judicial, scientific and governance perspectives among countries.

Who Are The Attendees at The Conference?

The conference has managed to gather eminent judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries and also attendees from India.

Buffett has been chairman of Berkshire Hathaway since 1970 and has been linked to the firm since 1965. Over the years, the leader has turned a New England textile firm into one of the most followed investment conglomerates on the planet.

In his shareholder letter, Buffett said that he is optimistic about the future of the firm and that working at Berkshire has been “an extraordinary professional journey” for him.

As chairman emeritus, Buffett will retain his position as a director but not as a chairman.

Howard Buffett, who is Warren Buffett’s son, will be the next chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Since 1993, he has been serving on the board of directors of the company.
