End of an Era: ‘Lion of Ladakh’ Col Sonam Wangchuk No More

India’s one of the bravest soldier Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd) was passed away on the 10th of April at the age of 61 in Leh. He was known as the “Lion of Ladakh” and he was decorated war hero and recipient of the prestigious Maha Vir Chakra which is India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award. With his passing marks the end of the end of an era which is defined by courage, leadership and the service to the nation.

A Hero of the Kargil War

During the Kargil War Colonel Wangchuk. then a Major in the Indian Army and led a mission in the Batalik sector.

On the May 30 1999, he commanded the troops of the Ladakh Scouts across the treacherous heights of Chorbat La which is located at an altitude of nearly 18,000 feet.

Despite the extreme weather conditions and lack of artillery support his team had successfully engaged with enemy forces.

With his leadership resulted in one of the earliest victory for India during that war conflict and it have boost morale and set the stage for further operations.

Leadership, Valour and Tactical Excellence

Colonel Wangchuk showcased the extraordinary courage by leading his troops through the deep snow, hostile terrain and enemy fire.

During the mission he just not only neutralized enemy soldiers but he also secured critical positions of strategic importance with his team.

His actions included the,

  • Capturing the enemy-held posts under heavy fire
  • Also reinforcing observation points during intense combat
  • And eliminating multiple enemy soldiers in close combat

To recognize his bravery two military posts ‘Sonam 1’ and ‘Sonam 2’ were named in his honor which is the rare tribute in military history.

Early Life and Journey into the Armed Forces

He was born on January 27, 1964 and he completed his schooling in the New Delhi and also an active sports enthusiast.

He later joined the Indian Army in the year 1987 and commissioned into the Assam Regiment before the serving with the Ladakh Scouts.

His journey reflects the life dedicated to discipline, patriotism and service.

Over the years he became the symbol of heroism in high-altitude warfare and inspired generations of soldiers.

Maha Vir Chakra Recognition

He was also awarded with the Maha Vir Chakra for his courage and leadership to the service. This honor is given for the acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy.

His contribution in the Operation Vijay not just tactical success but it also symbolized the resilience and fighting spirit of the brave Indian soldiers under extreme situations in terrain.
