The museum was unveiled by Honorable Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the National Library of Kolkata. He stated that the Shabdalok is a state-of-the-art language museum where people can learn about the history of Indian languages using technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and other displays. Another amazing aspect of this museum is that it will help make language learning easy and fun as it reveals India’s multilingual heritage and brings together technology and culture.

What is Shabdalok?

Shabdalok, significance of which is “Museum of Words,” is the first language museum in India which has been established by the Ministry of Culture in the premises of the National Library, Kolkata.

With unlike the traditional museums relying mainly on the static exhibits, the museum makes the use of modern technologies and offers a unique experience of interactive storytelling through the various modern technologies to its visitors.

This museum exhibits the journey of communication starting from the oral traditions to the written literature in addition to the other technologies.

Shabdalok is found inside the popularly-known as the Belvedere House which is an old house inside the National Library Campus in Kolkata.

Belvedere House has been the home of the National Library since 1948, which is one of the major institutions of the country with great culture and knowledge. The museum has been started in order to upgrade the library as an even more significant hub of language and literature.
