The IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Kanpur has planned to build a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Green Hydrogen, which is an important step forward in strengthened the India’s clean energy research space. This project has been sanctioned as part of the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024 and it is aimed at to further advancing the technology related to the hydrogen production, storage, use, and system integration. The name given to this facility is ECOGEN (Centre of Excellence on Innovative and Integrated Ecosystem for Green Hydrogen), which will play a major role in developing affordable green hydrogen technology and achieving sustainability and net-zero goals for India in the future.
What Is the IIT Kanpur Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence?
The Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence (ECOGEN) in Kanpur will be established as a dedicated facility focusing on various aspects related to green hydrogen development.
The Centre has received the approval of the Uttar Pradesh State Government and the sanction of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) according to the Green Hydrogen Policy of 2024.
The Centre is expected to be a focal point that connects scientific research with industrial applications of innovations happening in the green hydrogen ecosystem.
Why Is the Centre Being Created?
Green hydrogen is gaining traction as one of the most viable clean fuels for reducing carbon emissions and aiding sustainable industrial development.
The establishment of the new Centre for Excellence serves the following purposes,
- Carry forward research on green hydrogen technologies.
- Produce inexpensive methods of hydrogen production.
- Enhance the methods of storage and transportation of hydrogen.
- Encourage the industrial use of hydrogen energy.
- Facilitate the transition of India to cleaner energy sources.
This initiative coincides with the national and state efforts aimed at the promotion of renewable energy and lessening reliance on fossil fuel sources.
Key Research Areas of ECOGEN
This Centre will conduct the interdisciplinary research and it covering every stage of the green hydrogen ecosystem.
Its major research focus includes the,
- Hydrogen Energy Generation
- Hydrogen Storage
- Hydrogen Utilisation
- System Integration
Supporting Green Hydrogen Policy 2024 in Uttar Pradesh
